Story Title: The Girl the Forest Returned
EPISODE 2: THE VOICES THAT FOLLOWED
No one slept that night.
The wind did not rest.
It moved through the huts… slow… deliberate…
like it was searching.
By morning, three things had changed.
The river was lower.
The birds were gone.
And the girl was standing at the edge of the village… waiting.
The chief approached her carefully.
“You came back,” he said, “but something else came with you.”
She did not argue.
She did not deny it.
“They are not here to harm you,” she answered.
“They are here to remind you.”
“Remind us of what?”
She looked at the dry riverbed.
“Of the promise you broke.”
The elders exchanged worried glances.
Some of them remembered…
But none of them wanted to speak.
A child pointed toward the forest.
“The trees are moving again.”
This time, everyone saw it.
Branches swaying… though the air was still.
The chief’s voice hardened.
“What do they want?”
The girl stepped forward.
“They want you to listen… before they stop asking.”
Suddenly, the ground trembled — just once.
Not strong… but enough.
Fear spread across the village.
“What happens if we don’t?” someone whispered.
The girl answered, calm and certain:
“Then the forest will not return what it takes…
next time.”
And at that moment…
The wind stopped.
Completely.
That was when they realized —
It had been breathing.
