JAIL NorthIowaToday.com was launched on October 1, 2010 by Matthew E.

Marquardt of Mason City, Iowa. Marquardt is a native of Mason City, a graduate of Mason City High School and the University of Iowa. The inspiration for NorthIowaToday.com came from a Time magazine article (read it here) that questioned the future of local newspapers and praised micro-local news websites.

“As newspapers keep cutting back on staff and printing skimpier editions, journalists, entre

preneurs and ordinary citizens have responded by creating websites to cover the local news they feel is going under reported,” the article stated. Marquardt’s vision for NorthIowaToday.com since its launch has been to bring the news of everyday North Iowans to the people in a concise, clear and fun online environment where everyone has a chance to contribute.

“I’m thrilled with the success of NorthIowaToday.com,” Marquardt said recently. “After five years, to see what NIT has become and developed into, I coudn’t be happier. I’m looking forward to the future at this time and meeting the challenges of a growing news agency.”

The Eldora Police Department needs assistance locating a missing person.

At approximately 8:30-9:00 pm on 08/16/2025, Savannah Doak sent a text to her mother stating that she was on her way home from a friend’s house and that her phone battery was almost dead. Savannah never returned home and her phone has since been shut off and presumed the battery is dead. Savannah’s family believes the friend she was with lives in Eldora.

Savannah was last seen wearing a pink hoodie, blue shorts, and black Nike shoes with a gold stripe.

Age: 18 years old
Hair: Red/Orange
Eyes: Green
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 160lbs

Savannah struggles with depression and learning disabilities.

Family, friends, and law enforcement continue to search for Savannah.

MASON CITY - The urban legend in Mason City, advanced since about 2010, is that a hotel will be built in the Southbridge Mall parking lot, and that dirt will be moved any day now. As a beautiful $1 million skywalk is perched across Delaware Avenue, waiting to link up with this rumored hotel, city hall in Mason City is ready to reconstruct the surrounding parking lot and install new lighting.

As a reminder, one of the last promises made by city hall was in January during Mayor Bill Schickel's "state of the city" address, in which he guaranteed construction on the hotel was to begin this spring. It clearly did not happen, but townsfolk have been snickering at this deal since former mayor Eric Bookmeyer and his pals broached the subject nearly 15 years ago. It's been a wild ride ever since, and at this point, we are here for the shenanigans....
