She lives with a standard poodle, a husky, a Catahoula leopard dog, four cats, and a herd of deer that regularly helps itself to her garden. While her characters and their stories are fictional and the settings adapted, Auna loves to weave in quiet nods to her family, pets, and the landscapes that have shaped her life. MOLLY’S MORNING ROUTINE

My dog—a BIG standard poodle named Molly— gets up every morning, at 5 a.m. I swear, there’s a clock in her stomach. If she has dinner early, she gets up earlier—by the exact amount of time her kibble was dished out early the night before. For my sanity, consistency is key. Up, a run outside to “dehydrate,” breakfast, then we walk before sunrise.

Doggie-girl sniffs everything; I think about the story I’m working on.

It’s become a rhythm that works for us. A kind of meditation—movement, quiet, and a wagging tail.

Did you know that Lily, the main female character in The Reluctant Billionaire series also has a poodle named Molly? Lily's doggie is a dainty little white fluff ball. Mine is black and not so dainty.

DO CHARACTERS SURPRISE YOU?

Mine do.

I’ll start a scene with one idea, and suddenly a character makes a choice I didn’t see coming. It’s like watching someone reveal who they truly are. Those moments keep me writing—the mystery of people, even the ones we invent.
