Bow Lake - Alberta

Early June mornings in the mountains are brisk. The air is crisp, and the water along the shore had a thin layer of ice. Nothing this ND kid hasn't seen before, I'm just not used to it in June!!

Capturing photos like this requires getting up early. I was up at 3am, and on the road by 4am to make the slow drive through the curvy mountain roads. There is no traffic and no crowded parking lots to deal with because all the other tourists are still in town drinking their overpriced coffee. The early bird gets the worm, and in this case, the worm is the photo you see here of Bow Lake's reflections.

6 years ago today (7-11-19) I captured this image on my way home from work. I just got off a 12 hour nightshift and noticed a large sun halo on the horizon. I pulled over by this sprouting grain field and snapped a few pics. It is one of my favorite photos I've taken, and it's the only time I've seen Sundogs outside of the winter season! I titled this photo "Summer Sundogs".

Sundogs are created by the refraction of light through ice crystals in the atmosphere. This phenomenon can happen any time of year, but is most common in the winter. This is the only time I've seen a sun halo like this in the summer!

Incredible fireworks display at Waters Resort on Independence Day!!! The owners of Dakota Waters Resort and their employees are wonderful people. Great food, great drinks, great company. If you're ever on the south shore of Lake Sakakawea in Mercer County, be sure to pay them a visit!

This is a time-lapse of the June 27 tornado near Hannover ND. Watch this video a few times focusing on different areas of it. Obviously the funnel is going to draw your attention, but watch the clouds around it and note how they move in front of and behind the funnel. There are likely some fancy words to explain this all, but I'm not a weather guru!

Approximately 460 photos were used to make this video. Photos were taken south of Center ND.

Hannover ND 6-27-25 | It can be quite the chore to safely and successfully photograph storms. Having many types of radar and maps available at your fingertips is a huge bonus. However, these digital gadgets distract you while driving. Thankfully my wife Dust & Drift Snapshots was with me on this day. She watched the radar and did the navigating while I drove. She landed us south of Center ND where we were able to watch this event unfold from beginning to almost the end. I say "almost" because the hail started to hurt and we had to get back in our vehicle. As we drove back to the highway we met at least a half dozen vehicles with dash cams and weather stations hanging off their roofs. Most of them had out of state plates. They were all storm chasers of some sort. We chuckled because they were about 30 minutes late. You can't beat a couple of small town kids when it comes to navigating the backroads of ND 😅. I don't like these things and the damage they leave behind, but its a bit of a "rush" to get out and try to photograph them.

More of the big, beautiful, Canadian Rockies! had me shooting with my long zoom lens to capture the all the peaks and valleys within the mountain range. This is something I'm not used to doing back home, and it has gotten me out of my normal style of shooting.
