What Are Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs)?
You’ve probably seen videos claiming that “they wired your body.” While those videos often cite real scientific research, they frequently draw conclusions that the research itself does not support.
A Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is a short-range wireless network that connects medical or wellness devices located on, in, or around the human body. These systems are designed to collect physiological data and securely transmit it to a nearby device, such as a smartphone, medical monitor, or healthcare provider.
Common examples include:
* Pacemakers
* Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs)
* ECG and heart monitoring patches
* Hearing aids
* Implantable and wearable biosensors
WBAN technology has been studied for more than two decades and is standardized under IEEE 802.15.6, with research published by organizations including IEEE, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, and other peer-reviewed journals.
The existence of WBAN research does not mean people have been secretly implanted or “wired.” It demonstrates the advancement of medical technology intended to improve patient care, remote monitoring, and quality of life for individuals who use these devices.
Before accepting extraordinary claims, it’s worth reading the underlying research and distinguishing between documented science and unsupported speculation.
