Last weekend a resident experienced a concerning incident when an overhead power line rubbed against a tree and arced.

The utility company is responsible for the line side of the service and took care of the repair promptly.

Understandably, the tenant was shaken and asked us to inspect the interior of the home to confirm everything was safe.

We checked the wiring at the panels and several outlets. Everything appeared to be in good working order, though we noted that some of the equipment is showing its age and will need replacement in the near future.

We are happy to perform electrical inspections and help put together a clear plan for any needed updates.

Our goal is simple: we want every neighbor to feel confident and safe in their home, and reliable electrical systems are an important part of that.

The most dangerous part of your home might be something you never think about.

We replaced another Federal Pacific (FPE) Stab-Lok panel today on Kalmia in Boulder.

Federal Pacific panels have been linked to safety concerns for decades because some breakers may fail to trip during an overload or short circuit. A breaker that doesn’t trip can’t do the job it was designed to do.

If you own an older home, it’s worth taking a minute to check your electrical panel. We regularly find these panels in Old Town Longmont (Gay St., 3rd Ave., and surrounding neighborhoods) and older parts of Boulder, including Bluebell and Kalmia.

How do you know if you have one?

* The panel will typically say Federal Pacific or Stab-Lok.
* Many have the recognizable brown breakers.

If you’re unsure, send us a photo of your panel or give us a call. We’ll help you identify it and discuss your options.

These homeowners can rest easy knowing their panel and service have been updated to a code-complaint safe system.
We removed their old FP panel in the stairway, brought everything outside, installed a new panel with new breakers, replaced the meter housing, and raised the mast!

A lot of homes in older parts of Longmont and Boulder still have these outdated Federal Pacific (FP) panels — and if you have one, it’s worth addressing sooner rather than later.

Take a close look at the photo. If your electrical panel looks like this, you’re looking at a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panel. These breakers are known for a serious issue: they often fail to trip properly during overloads or short circuits. That can lead to overheating, arcing, and a significantly higher risk of electrical fires.

Many homeowners don’t even realize they have one until something goes wrong. Some insurance companies are already flagging them or requiring replacement for coverage. Don’t wait for that call.

Altona Electric is fully licensed in Longmont and we specialize in safely replacing these dangerous panels with modern, reliable electrical systems. We handle the entire process for you:
• Thorough inspection and honest assessment
• Full service upgrades as needed
• Permit assistance
• Coordination with the city and power company

Whether you’re planning future upgrades like solar, EV charging, or just want real peace of mind for your family, swapping out that old FP panel is one of the smartest safety moves you can make.

If you have one of these panels, call us today. We’ll get you a fast quote and take care of it the right way.
