5 and 6A Schools in Southern Oregon were caught off guard when the sixth and final OSAA proposal for redistricting came out in early December. The proposal going forward to the Executive Committee next Monday for all sports except for football calls for a 4 team 6A league with North, South, GP, and Roseburg. And a 4 team 5A league with Crater, Ashland, Eagle Point, and Henley. We talked with Medford School District AD Fred Kondziela Wednesday about the last minute change to dissolve the ties with the Eugene schools and efforts by the Southern schools to lobby the OSAA for an alternate plan.

The Crater Boys basketball team is off to a quick 3-0 start with wins over 6A Sheldon, Roseburg, and in overtime Tuesday Grants Pass. Fourth year Head Coach Bryan Scott is deep with returning talent and a senior class that has been to the 5A state playoffs the last two years. A tough Midwestern league schedule opens in January and it looks like the Coments will be ready to contend. We got an update from Coach Scott Wednesday on Tee It Up. Jeff Rodgers and I featured former Ashland athlete Jimmy Rodgers earlier this fall on Tee It Up. Jimmy played for the Washington Huskies and Coach Don James and we planned to have Jimmy on this week to talk college football after the Ducks win in Seattle last Saturday. Rodgers played on the Ashland Bear Cubs undefeated middle school team during his time in Ashland that was coached by Jerry Hauck. With Coach Hauck's passing one week ago football went to the back burner and we started our conversation with some reflections on Jerry who coached Rodgers in football and baseball.

Ashland and the Southern Oregon sports community lost a good one Thanksgiving day when Jerry Hauck passed away. Jerry coached football, basketball, and the Ashland Legion baseball teams along the way. His Grizzly basketball teams won Southern Oregon Conference titles and finished 4th at the 1986 State Tournament. David Heard played for Coach Hauck at Ashland before a college career at SOU and then became the long time coach of the Crater Girls Basketball program. David took time Wednesday to help us remember Jerry Hauck.
