This morning an observant resident of Leland Road noticed a groundhog acting strangely between their yard and the next yard over. Due to a dog being nearby while the groundhog was outside, coupled with the weird behavior of the suspect, I responded and observed the animal. The animal was acting with characteristics of the furious form of rabies. He was house hugging at high speeds (running around the house foundation with intent/circling the perimeter), darting under objects, trying to eat cinderblocks, vocalizing, walking/running with mouth-fulls of leaves and twigs, tried to ascend (unsuccessfully) into the engine compartment of a vehicle, and once fixated on sounds and shapes, would charge towards the sound and shapes (he was charging people and animals - and how I was eventually able to catch him as he charged at me multiple times). Highly erratic behavior for this species.

I was able to capture the animal, he was euthanized, prepared for rabies testing, transported to the state rabies lab, and the result came back positive for rabies.

This is a good reminder to make sure your animals are vaccinated for rabies and that you report animals that are acting erratically.

If anyone, or their animal, had ANY physical interaction with this groundhog at Leland Wild or at Kingsbury Pond, please contact animal control at (508) 528 3232 Extension #7. Leland Wild Foundation

NORFOLK – Police Chief Timothy Heinz and Fire Chief Erron Kinney report that a three-alarm house fire at 3 Main St. in Norfolk is currently under investigation.

On Tuesday, June 24, at approximately 9:40 a.m., Norfolk Fire and Police responded to a structure fire at 3 Main St. called in by a passerby.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof. Crews located heavy fire along the back of the house.

Due to the heavy fire and heat conditions, a second and third alarm were struck, bringing additional assistance to the scene.

Two firefighters have been transported to the hospital due to heat exhaustion.

Crews are currently conducting preliminary searches. There are no injuries at this time.

The State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office are investigating.

As a result of the fire and an ongoing investigation, a section of Main Street from Clark Street to the Walpole town line was closed down for traffic.

About a dozen area fire departments are providing mutual aid on scene, along with station coverage. Providence Canteen and Department of Fire Services Special Operations Unit are also on scene.
