The biggest touring act on the planet spent his week eating dinner on Long Island, and by Friday half of Smithtown was in on the joke.

Ed Sheeran, in the area for back-to-back Loop Tour nights at MetLife Stadium, put in two hours at Osteria Umbra in Smithtown on Tuesday, where the Italian cheesecake with blueberry compote reportedly stole the show. Wednesday night he was at eatMOSAIC in St. James, the 30-seat room where the five-course tasting menu is blind and changes nightly, and he told his Instagram followers it was the best meal he has eaten all year.

For forty years, the Superblock was the emptiest famous lot on Long Island: six oceanfront acres in the middle of Long Beach, fenced off through one collapsed plan after another while the boardwalk ran right past it. That era is ending with dinner.

Hacienda Tulum, a Mexican steakhouse from the team behind Baldwin's Tulum Taco & Tequila, grand-opens this September at 180 Boardwalk, at the base of The Breeze, the development that finally filled the parcel. The liquor license was issued July 8, the reservation book is already open, and the group's walk-up taco stand and sit-down taqueria are serving on the same stretch of boardwalk now.

A generation of Long Beach kids grew up biking past a fence where the city's showpiece block should have been. The next one will grow up thinking margaritas by the ocean were always normal.

There is a corner of Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre where the ceiling is a night sky and the espresso drinks are named for planets. Tête-à-Tête Cafeteria opened at 239 Sunrise Highway in mid-August, an entire cafe built on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince, steps from the LIRR station.

The menu reads like the book: espresso under Planets, cold brew under Roses, signature iced lattes under Sunsets, matcha and chai under Fox's Favorites, and croissants from the Starlit Bakery. The early word-of-mouth order is the Spanish iced latte with condensed milk, served from a 3D menu customers photograph nearly as much as the drinks.

The hours are the practical story. Doors open at 5:30 a.m. on weekdays, early enough for the first Penn-bound riders, and Thursday through Saturday the cafe stays open until midnight, filling a gap Nassau County has had for years: a place to sit and talk after dinner that is not a bar and not a diner.

Labor Day lands September 7, which hands Long Island one last three-day weekend before the school buses take the roads back.

The anchor: the Shinnecock Indian Powwow turns 80, running Friday through Monday on the nation's territory in Southampton, with dancers and drum groups competing for more than $50,000 in prize money and grand entries at 12:30 each afternoon.

The birthday: Island Park closes out its centennial Saturday night with Andy Cooney at Masone Beach and fireworks over the harbor.

The freebie: Mike DelGuidice, the Long Islander who sings beside Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden, headlines the Town of Hempstead's season closer at Point Lookout on Saturday. The day starts at 3, the music around 8, and it costs nothing.

You have probably eaten at a Lessing's without knowing it. The company behind the Mansion at West Sayville, the Mansion at Timber Point, the Heritage Club at Bethpage and the Three Village Inn has been feeding Long Island since 1890, when Maxwell Lessing opened a Manhattan lunch counter and became the first restaurateur in New York to serve Coca-Cola.

136 years, six generations and more than 120 locations later, the family firm finally built a home of its own: a new headquarters at 3525 Sunrise Highway in Great River, the first building it has ever constructed entirely for its own team. There is an open floor plan, an outdoor patio, an employee kitchen, and a floor-to-ceiling image of the original 1890 lunch counter greeting everyone who walks in the door.

The portfolio also runs to a historic inn older than the Declaration of Independence, the presidential yacht that once carried John F. Kennedy, and more than 80 corporate and academic dining rooms. If you have lived here any length of time, some meal that mattered to you probably passed through this company's kitchens.

Everyone has the bad one. The photo cropped out of a wedding. The one taken against an office wall in the wrong light, where you are squinting slightly and your collar is doing something odd. It sits on your LinkedIn profile for six years because replacing it means booking something, and booking something means being photographed, which almost nobody enjoys.

That reluctance is the actual problem, and it is the one Len Marks has spent thirty-eight years solving from a studio on New York Avenue in Huntington village.

Long Island Wave used him for our own corporate headshots, which is the only reason we can write the next sentence with any authority: he is the top headshot photographer on Long Island and in New York City, and the difference is not the camera.

The technical side of a headshot, the lighting and the focus and the exposure, was solved a long time ago. What has never been solved is that most people tighten up the moment a camera is pointed at them, and a tight person photographs as a guarded one. You end up with a picture that is technically correct and looks nothing like you on a good day.

Len treats that as the whole job. The mechanics are coaching rather than equipment: direction on wardrobe, on posing, and on expression, through the entire session. Being told what to do with your hands sounds like a small thing. It is the difference between the photo you keep and the photo you tolerate.

A session is up to an hour in the studio, built for variety rather than three frames and hope, and everything is delivered the same day. The industry norm is a wait of days or weeks, which is exactly long enough for the momentum behind updating your profile to die.

Most people find him through headshots and are surprised by the range: individual, team, actor, fashion and dance headshots, commercial and product work, brand photography shot at your place of business, a mobile headshot booth for trade shows, interactive event photography, editorial portraits of working artists, and museum-quality art reproduction.

Order the steak frites at L'Étoile in Oyster Bay and the menu tells you where the beef came from: it was aged by The Bay Butcher.

That is not a supplier in Pennsylvania. It is a shop three minutes' walk up the same street, owned by the same family, and it will sell you the identical cut over the counter to cook at home. A restaurant group that got tired of the supply chain went and bought the supply chain, then put a retail counter on the front of it.

The Bay Butcher opened in May 2026 at 96 South Street, three storefronts from the water. In the case: dry-aged strip, bone-in dry-aged ribeye, porterhouse, a long-bone ribeye in the tomahawk profile and Allen Brothers filet mignon, plus A5 Japanese Wagyu tenderloin, hand-cut A5 cubes and an Australian Wagyu bavette. Duroc pork, an eight-rib rack of lamb, house sausages mixed in the shop, Prosciutto di Parma and coppa, and a fresh seafood counter.

Nothing is priced online, which is honest rather than evasive: a butcher's case is priced by the pound and by the day. Custom cuts are standard. Tell them the size of the table, how you plan to cook it and roughly what you want to spend.

Read the hours twice, because they are a butcher's hours and not a supermarket's: Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 6 PM, Sunday 10 AM to 3 PM, closed Monday. Plan the Saturday barbecue shop before lunch, not after.

Golf before work is coming to Ronkonkoma. Island Greens, the indoor golf simulator club that two Chaminade High School graduates built after starting with a screen in a basement, has signed on at Station Yards, the TRITEC development beside the Ronkonkoma LIRR station. Its space at 9 Hawkins Avenue is penciled in for 2027, and it will be the company's first Suffolk County location.

The plan steps up from the Franklin Square original: TrackMan launch monitors reading more than 40 data points on every shot across 550 courses, augmented reality darts, lounge seating and a TV in every bay, and doors open 5 a.m. to midnight, 365 days a year. Members are slated to get their own access codes for the early morning window, which means a practice session before the 7:14 train is an actual plan. One hourly rate covers the whole bay for up to six people, with no guest fees.

Hicksville's newest building sits about as close to the train as a building can get, and 19 of its apartments just went up for lottery at below-market rents.

The Lisle, the 189-unit building at 100 Nelson Avenue, broke ground in December 2023 as the anchor of the downtown rebuild. Now the Long Island Housing Partnership is taking free applications for 19 units across two income tiers: a studio at $2,165, one-bedrooms from $2,309, two-bedrooms from $2,755, and a single three-bedroom at $4,022. Market-rate listings in the same building start above $3,100.

The income windows run from $55,224 for a single applicant up to $203,750 for a household of seven, aimed squarely at working households priced between subsidy and the open market.

The deadline is September 28, and the lottery sets the order applications are reviewed.

Pain is the reason most people end up in a doctor's office, and it is also the condition the American healthcare system is worst at handling as a single problem.

A patient with chronic back pain sees an orthopedist, then a neurologist, then a physical therapist, then a pain management specialist, and each one sees a slice. Nobody in that chain is in a room with the others.

Getting them into one room is the entire premise of the 2026 Pain Management Symposium, and it happens on Long Island on September 10.

Thursday, September 10, from 5:00 PM, at The Piermont, 494 Fire Island Avenue in Babylon. Tickets are $25 early bird, $35 general admission, $25 student or resident. Those prices are not a typo. A clinical evening with panels, exhibits and dinner at a waterfront venue, for the price of two coffees, because 100% of ticket proceeds are donated rather than kept.

Every dollar goes to the Curvy Girls Scoliosis Foundation, a 501(c)(3) running peer-led support and mentorship for young women living with scoliosis. That pairing is better than it first looks: the brace is prescribed by a surgeon, and the willingness to wear it through middle school comes from somewhere else entirely.

The centerpiece is a panel built to cross the specialty lines that normally keep these clinicians apart, drawing experts across pain management, neurosurgery, physical therapy, massage therapy, orthopedics and neurology.

The evening runs cocktails and exhibits from 5, a welcome on the pier at 6, lounge-style dinner at 6:30, the panel at 7:15, audience questions at 8:15, then dessert, raffles and networking. Only about ninety minutes of it is formal programming, which is the honest admission that the networking is the product.

Registration also includes a professional headshot, photographed on the night by Len Marks.
