Press Club of Long Island

Press Club of Long Island PCLI is the local pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. PRESS CLUB OF LONG ISLAND is a professional chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

We’re devoted to protecting and advocating for First Amendment rights, furthering ethical standards and providing ongoing training for our members. PCLI, one of SPJ’s largest pro chapters, hosts two signature events: an annual Holiday Show and Party in December and the PCLI Media Awards, which honors the best in local journalism. The club was founded in 1974 in response to a reporter who was jailed for failing to reveal a source. The club’s first president, Karl Grossman, says the founders borrowed a media list from Stony Brook University’s university relations department, sent letters to members of the press. More than fifty journalists showed up for an historic first meeting at the Three Village Inn in Stony Brook. PCLI not only gave journalists a place where they could connect, but more importantly promoted journalism advocacy. During its first year, PCLI adopted a constitution and operated for several years as an independent organization before joining SPJ.

Mission: We’re devoted to protecting and advocating for First Amendment rights, furthering ethical standards and providing ongoing training for our members.

"Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Artists" QandA

Last year the Press Club of Long Island co-presented a screening of "Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Artists" with Hamptons Doc Fest. PCLI extends its condolences to the Hamill family.

Here is a video of the post-screening Q&A that includes some personal stories from Pete's brother Denis Hamill.

PCLI Special Media Awards: We have been featuring our top honors for the 2020 PCLI Media Awards for the last couple of weeks.

Next to highlight is our posthumous Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame Inductee: David Frothingham, the publisher of Long Island's first weekly newspaper.

In partnership with the Sag Harbor Historical Society, the Press Club honored the location where David Frothingham published Frothingham’s Long Island Herald on May 10, 1791. A ceremony was held in Sag Harbor on June 6, 2018.

Jack Youngs, Vice President of the Sag Harbor Historical Society: “David Frothingham played an important role in the early years of journalism especially on Long island where he established the first newspaper, The Long Island Herald, in Sag Harbor, New York. The year was 1791 and this young New Englander answered the call to publish local news as well as news from around the country and the world. The people of Sag Harbor are extremely proud of the fact that the first newspaper was established on Eastern Long Island in our quaint little Village. It is with great satisfaction that we can say, ‘It's a feather in our cap."

PCLI will continue to highlight this year's special media award winners - our highest honors - throughout the coming days.

This year's Hank Logeman High School Journalism Scholarship winner is Yaw Basaw from Baldwin High School!

"Being named a recipient of this scholarship is a testament to the hard work and dedication I have put in over the past few years. Although this is a reflection of my work, it is with the help of people such as Bill Bleyer, Scott Brinton, and the Baldwin Senior High School Business Department that I am able to be the journalist that I am today. It is a huge honor to win this scholarship but the work does not stop here. This scholarship will obviously help me with college expenses. But on top of that, it will inspire me to continue building my journalism resume on my mission to become one of the greatest sports broadcasters of my time. “Outwork the next man” are words that I have and will always live by. It is that mentality that has carried me to earn this honor and hopefully many more to come. Thank you to the Press Club of Long Island. I will use this honor to carry on the legacy of Hank Logeman."
