Sobibór, 1943. In this place, hidden in the heart of the Polish forests, where death was supposed to be invisible and swift, the child leaned for a moment over a pool of stagnant water. Around him, the dust kicked up by footsteps, muffled screams, and the barking of dogs created a scene where nothing was innocent anymore. But there, on the hard-packed earth of the camp, that thin mirror of water brought him an unexpected discovery: his own reflection.
He hesitated, almost afraid the face in the water was only a ghost. Slowly, he moved his gaze closer and saw gaunt features, sunken cheeks, skin darkened by hunger and grime. The eyes staring back at him were no longer those of a child: they had lost their spark of curiosity, replaced by a silent seriousness, a weariness too great for such a young age. He was surprised, almost terrified, recognizing himself and yet not recognizing himself. The Sobibór camp, a cold and methodical machine dedicated to extermination, had transformed every human being into a shadow, every identity into dust.
