New Cancer Coverage Law Now in Effect – And We’re Helping Spread the Word

As of July 1, the Barry Brady Act has officially expanded to include pancreatic, breast, and prostate cancer under Tennessee’s presumptive coverage law for firefighters. This is a major win for firefighter health and safety across the state.

Middle Tennessee District Vice President Colton Young had the opportunity to speak with local news outlets this week about what this means for firefighters and their families. His message was clear: “This law isn’t just policy — it’s personal. It ensures our brothers and sisters battling cancer aren’t left to fight alone.”

This expansion comes thanks to the advocacy of many, including the Hendersonville Firefighters Association Local 3460 , Hendersonville Fire Department (TN) - Official Site and the family of Captain Don Dallenbach, whose passing earlier this year pushed this legislation forward in a powerful way.

✅Cancer is the leading cause of firefighter line-of-duty deaths.
✅These new protections help ensure timely support and care.

We’ll continue to fight for better coverage, earlier screenings, and the health of every firefighter in Tennessee.

International Association of Fire Fighters

Firefighters have a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer than the general population, according to a 2024 study done by International Association of Firefighters.

🎆 Happy 4th of July from the Tennessee Professional Fire Fighters Association! 🇺🇸

Today, we celebrate the freedom we’re honored to serve under every day. From our firehouse family to yours, have a safe and joyful Independence Day!

🔥 A few safety reminders from your firefighters:
• Keep fireworks away from children and always follow local laws.
• Never relight a “dud” firework—soak it in water and dispose of it safely.
• Have a bucket of water or hose nearby just in case.
• Never aim fireworks at people, homes, or pets.
• If grilling, keep grills away from siding and deck railings, and never leave them unattended.

Stay safe, celebrate smart, and enjoy the holiday!
