Memphis International Records Memphis International Records. Memphis International Records was founded in 2001 by music industry veterans David Less and Bob Merlis.

The label partners’ philosophy then, as it is now after five years of operation, was to record and release “music we like.” Taking that novel idea in this age of multinational music conglomerates a step further, they adopted a slogan for the company that reflected their approach: “Putting the music back into the music business.” With an emphasis on roots and blues, Memphis International, and its s

ubsidiary, Brooklyn International, has released sixteen full-length albums. These range from the soundtrack to an award winning film and a Grammy ® nominated blues album. The catalog includes an archival collection of proto-rockabilly, an album recorded in a state prison and an album of western swing music. Memphis International is the home of A Capella and Cajun music, the Queen of Memphis Soul, a Swiss blues singer, a Swedish pop star, a brilliant male soul vocalist much more. A fund raising album for victims of Hurricane Katrina is also one of the company’s releases. In short, Memphis International is small but eclectic, compact but encompassing. In 2015, Memphis International was purchased by Memphian Jeff Phillips. Thanks for stopping by and we hope you like what you see and hear.

“The Night’s Last Dance,” like all the songs on the new album, is totally organic. With “The Night’s Last Dance,” I had the melody dancing around my head. I sat down with a guitar in the studio, and out it came. I sent it to Tim Carter and Dave Jacques to finish. In a day, we had a song and a track. Titling the song, “The Night’s Last Dance,” just felt right…..a waltz to end the night.

We're teaming up with The Radio Kings Michael Dinallo for the reissue of their eponymous album, available on all your preferred streaming and download platforms Friday, April 12, 2024. Presave/Preorder here: https://orcd.co/radiokings

Everything comes full circle.
“You Can’t Keep A Good Man Down” states the opening track of The Radio Kings reissue on Memphis International Records. The album was originally released on Gibraltar Records in 2009.
You also can’t keep a good band down – some have said a great band. We won’t disagree. In 1994, The Radio Kings made their debut album, It Ain’t Easy, for Icehouse Records, owned by Johnny Phillips. The album was co-produced by Jay Sheffield – who would later go on to manage the band. Now, here we are thirty years later with the reissue of The Radio Kings on Memphis International Records, owned by Johnny Phillips and his son Jeff Phillips. Everything comes full circle.

The Radio Kings includes seven new songs from the pens of Michael Dinallo & Brian Templeton. The Memphis influenced “Can’t Keep A Good Man Down” to the Dion meets California pop of “Donna” to the bluesier “The Moanin’ Blues” and “Watch The Trains Roll By.” There’s “Everything Is Gonna Be All Light,” a heavy, blues-funk workout, the industrial-jungle blues of “Evil Love”, and last but certainly not least “I’m Not Trippin,’” an almost Orbison-like dreamy ballad. Also on the record are “Pallet on the Floor” and “You Got to Die” both re-workings of traditional tunes. The Magic Sam song “She Belongs to Me” and O.V. Wright’s “You’re Gonna Make Me Cry” round out the record – these
classic blues and soul tunes go back to the roots of the band’s earliest shows in 1991.

**Gibraltar Records, under exclusive license to Memphis International Records.**

Produced, recorded, and mixed by Michael Dinallo and Ducky Carlisle, The Tremolo Twins
Associate producer: Brian Templeton
Executive producer: George Wyckoff

This reissue is dedicated to our loving memory of Ducky Carlisle. Peace, Brother

In 1991, I opened my entertainment consulting firm (S.P.E.C.S.) to book and present musical talent for client’s events. In other words, shows promoted with other people’s money. I decided it was time to begin using company funds. I take the risk. I get the reward. This recording is from a show in February 1992, featuring Ann Peebles and the Hi Rhythm Section on a bill with Otis Clay. Called "An Evening of Classic Soul" it was to be the first S.P.E.C.S. show using my own money. Ironically at the newly opened Pyramid Arena, neo soul singer Michael Bolton was performing to over 18,000 fans. An Evening of Classic Soul had a small enthusiastic crowd ending my experiment into self-promoted music. I had lost money after paying the expenses. But I learned the first rule of music promotion. Sometimes you eat the bear. Sometimes the bear eats you. This record captured Ann Peebles’ only live recording with the Hi Rhythm Section. Crowd size didn’t matter. Her show was spectacular as she and the Hi Rhythm Section locked in as they did when they recorded her albums. Joining her that night was a crack horn section and her background singers including the equally soulful David J. Hudson. They cruise through hit after hit with Ann showing why she was one of John Lennon’s favorite singers. As you listen to Ann and the amazing supporting cast it’s clear that this was An Evening of Classic Soul. It was “99 pounds of soul” versus a “wanna be soul provider” across town. So if you are deciding between this record and one by Michael Bolton, choose wisely. –David Less
