Susan Marquez Writes I'm curious, and writing gives me an excuse to ask questions. Everyone has a story, and I love hearing them, then sharing them. Thanks for reading what I write.

I have been writing feature articles about people, places, and Southern culture since 2001.

If you’re keeping up with this season of American Idol, then you’ve seen the amazing Hannah Harper. I had the honor of writing about her and the cover story of the April issue of the Bluegrass Standard. The article begins on page 38.

Just as exciting as the “birth” of a new book is a new bookstore! Richelle Putnam writes about Mississippi’s newest bookstore, located in the Mississippi Delta town of Leland, in today’s Magnolia Tribute.
https://magnoliatribune.com/2026/03/25/another-chapter-to-a-mississippi-delta-story/Larry, I’m not gonna go work out today. I’m afraid I have my stomach‘s just turning right now.

Opening the first bookstore in Leland carries special significance for Sara Worsham.

If you’re in the metro Jackson area Saturday, head to the Waller craft center in Ridgeland for this event! You’ve never seen anything like it…

The next time you wrap in a cozy woolen scarf or shawl, consider where the wool came from. It’s easy to get a clear picture when you begin with the source of that soft, warm wool. Visitors to the Waller Craft Center on March 28 can experience the excitement of seeing a sheep being shorn, then watch as talented craftsmen spin and weave the wool into a beautiful and functional piece of heirloom quality.

Just before mother nature turned the temperature way down, we spent the day Saturday at a beautiful farm near Carthage, where we saw the North Carolina-based band,The Little Mercies, performed. I’ll be writing about them for the June issue of the Bluegrass Standard magazine.

What an honor it has been for me to write about Kelle Barfield - one of the culture-bearers in our state. Read all about her here:

Across the state, there are people who quietly, diligently, and passionately work to protect, preserve, and raise the cultural aspects that define a community. The artists, the planners, the policymakers, and the patrons are the culture-bearers we will be celebrating over the next few months. Vicksburg is fortunate to have such a person in Kelle Barfield.

Why I Write

I write because I’m curious. I write because it gives me a reason to ask questions. From CEOs of major corporations, to musicians, to the guy down the street who is doing something really cool, writing gives me a reason to talk to people, to learn from them, to tell their stories.

I write because I’m good at it. Since 2001, I’ve had over 2600 articles published in magazines, newspapers, business journals and trade publications. I am a regular contributor to 15 publications. I think that’s because I write clean and I’m dependable. I am deadline-driven. I like doing it. I wake up every day and write. I am blessed to do what I do.

I write because I love to read. I respect good writing. I want to help others with their writing. Growing, learning and improving as a writer is important to me. That’s why I joined the Mississippi Writers Guild. I’m now the president of the statewide organization whose mission is to give all writers a voice. I hope more writers and aspiring writers will join us. www.mississippiwritersguild.com.
