For folks going to early vote today in Memphis here are my recommendations for the 6 referendums on the ballot.
Referendum 1 Ordinance No. 5884:
Shall the Charter of the City of Memphis be amended to allow the majority run off provision to apply for the City of Memphis Mayor?
Vote “For the Amendment” ✅
Referendum 2 Ordinance No. 5893:
Shall the City Council set salaries for the Mayor, City Council, Chief Administrative Officer, and Appointed Directors and Deputy Directors?
Vote “For the Amendment” ✅
I support this amendment because having the City Council that we elect set the salaries of these positions gives us a source of accountability and a direct elected official to lobby if we want changes.
Referendum 3 Ordinance No. 5913:
Shall the City of Memphis Charter be amended to read:
A. No person shall be eligible for the office of Mayor who is not at least eighteen (18) years of age, and who has not been a bona fide resident of the City of Memphis for at least two (2) years preceding the date of the municipal election for Mayor, or who at the time of his election and qualification holds any other office, or who is directly or indirectly interested in any contract with the City.
B. No person shall be eligible for any office of the City Council lwho is not at least eighteen (18) years of age, and who has not been a bona fide resident of the City of Memphis for at least two (2) years preceding the date of the
municipal election.
🗣️Vote “AGAINST THE AMENDMENT” ❌❌❌
This referendum would change the residency requirement to run for Memphis Mayor or City Council to ONLY 2 YEARS. Which is insane, folks running for these very important positions should have more of a vested interest in our city than living here for 2 years.
