(ACEs) Adverse Childhood Experiences and Addiction

In Episode 26, host Chad LaComb speaks with Bridgette J. Peteet, PhD, MA.; professor of psychology at Loma Linda University. She is a licensed clinical psychologist and the author of (Dis)Honor Thy Mother: Daughterhood, Dysfunction and Deliverance. Together, they explore childhood trauma and the hidden roots of addiction.

This episode addresses a subject that is often left unspoken. It looks at the harm that can grow when the mother-child relationship is shaped by neglect. It also considers emotional distance and dysfunction. Dr. Peteet draws from professional insight and personal experience. She explains how adverse childhood experiences can affect identity, showing how those experiences can shape mental health and relationships and increase the risk of addiction.

Chad and Dr. Peteet discuss how destructive family patterns can pass from one generation to the next. They examine what it takes to break those cycles. Healing requires truth and courage. It also requires steady and intentional work. Their conversation points to the healing power of faith and highlights therapy and mentoring. Supportive communities can help people face the past; it can also help them build a healthier future.

If you have ever wondered how childhood wounds continue to shape adult life, this is a conversation worth hearing.

Epigenetics and the Biology of Recovery

In Episode 25, host Chad LaComb sits down with Dr. Lou Wing, a molecular biologist and pastor, to explore the groundbreaking science of epigenetics and its profound intersection with faith. Dr. Wing, author of The Genes of Eden, explains that while we may inherit predispositions for addiction, our genes are not our destiny.

We dive into the concept of Somatic Theology, the belief that our bodies are the "temple" where spiritual disciplines like prayer and meditation manifest as physical resilience. From the "Original Sin" of DNA methylation to the neuroplasticity of "progressive sanctification," this episode offers a roadmap for anyone looking to understand how a life in Christ literally rewires the brain and body for recovery.

In Joshua 11, God gives Joshua a strange command after defeating a massive army: he must hamstring their horses and burn their chariots. To any military general, this was madness. Chariots were the "tanks" of the ancient world; they were an massive upgrade to Israel's weaponry.

But God didn't want Israel to win their next battle using the enemy’s technology. He wanted them to win by trusting His power. This echoes the warning in Psalm 20:7: "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God."

Sometimes, God asks us to "burn the chariots", to walk away from the worldly resources we are tempted to lean on, so that He can be our only support. We can't fully experience His strength until we stop relying on our own.

In Joshua 10, Joshua leads his army on an exhausting overnight march to save the Gibeonites. This is shocking because the Gibeonites had just lied to Joshua in the previous chapter to trick him into a treaty.

He could have let them be destroyed and called it "justice." Instead, he honored his covenant.

This paints a powerful picture of Jesus. 2 Timothy 2:13 tells us, "If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself." Like Joshua, Jesus defends us not because we are perfect, but because His promise is unbreakable.

Joshua 8 opens with one of the most encouraging phrases in the Bible. Just days after a humiliating defeat caused by sin, God speaks to Joshua: "Do not be afraid or discouraged."

He then immediately sends them back to the very place where they failed, Ai, and gives them the victory. God didn't fire Joshua for the failure; He recommissioned him.

This mirrors the beautiful moment on the beach in John 21. Peter had failed miserably, denying Jesus three times. But Jesus didn't meet him with a lecture; He met him with breakfast and a command to "Feed my sheep." In the Kingdom of God, past failure does not disqualify you from future service.

When the storm raged in Acts 27, the natural instinct of the sailors was to flee. They lowered the lifeboat, thinking they could save themselves.

But Paul stopped them, and the soldiers cut the boat loose. They realized that salvation wasn't found in escaping the ship, but in staying together through the storm.

This connects to Jesus’ teaching on the Vine and the Branches in John 15:4: "Remain in me, as I also remain in you." We often try to construct "lifeboats" to escape our difficulties.. distractions, addictions, or avoidance. But Jesus calls us to remain. The miracle happens not by escaping the struggle, but by abiding in Him through it.
