of how I got custody of a baby I’m no kin to. In the winter of 2023, I responded to a Facebook plea for help from a mother who found herself homeless with her newborn by bringing them to my home. Upon arrival, she asked to leave shortly after, which led to a series of events where she demonstrated her inability to provide stable care for the baby. Despite having no prior relationship or discussion beyond the baby's immediate needs, my husband and I found ourselves caring for the newborn. When the mother returned after the first night, her condition and behavior raised significant concerns, particularly given the baby's needs were not her priority. As the situation progressed and she left the baby with me again, stating she was frustrated and needed a break, only to not return for an extended period, I took steps to understand her situation better, especially given the holiday period and the baby's well-being.
