Burg Hohenzoller is a castle not far from the city of Tübingen, Germany. It belonged to and was built by the noble Prussian family of the Hohenzollern, who lived here from the early Middle Ages to the First World War. Originally built in the first part of the 11th century, it was completely destroyed after a ten-month siege in 1423 by the union of some Swabian cities. A second, larger castle was built from 1454 to 1461 and served as a refuge for the Hohenzollern family in times of war, even during the Thirty Years War. At the end of the 18th century, however, it began to be thought that the castle had lost its strategic importance and gradually fell into abandonment. This led to the collapse of several buildings. Today only the chapel remains of the original medieval building. The third reconstruction of the castle, as we see it today, was carried out between 1846 and 1867 by King Frederick William IV in a neo-Gothic style mainly for celebrating the prestige of the Hohenzollern family.

Finstergrün Castle (German: Burg Finstergrün) is a castle in the state of Salzburg, Austria. The castle is believed to have been built in 1296/97 by Rudolf von Fohnsdorf. In 1300 it was described as “a border fortress” between the Archbishopric of Salzburg and the Duchy of Styria. During the 14th and 15th centuries it became the seat of the administrator who was in charge of managing the silver mines in Ramingstein. The first documented mention of the name Burg Finstergruen (dark ditch) occurred in 1629.

In 1841 the castle complex was destroyed by a forest fire. In 1899 a new owner, Count Sándor Szapary, bought the castle and rebuilt a comfortable house from the ruins. It was later inherited by his son. In the 1930s and 1940s the castle belonged to Countess Margit Szapáry, who took in selected paying guests.

After the Second World War, Burg Finstergrün became a centre of the activities of the Evangelical Youth movement.

The Landsberg Castle in Meiningen was a former pleasure palace of the Dukes of Saxony-Meiningen and was a romantic first-class hotel until December 2013.
The castle was built on the ruins of the Landeswehre castle destroyed in the Peasant War in the years 1836 to 1840 and is located on the northern outskirts of the district town of Meiningen on a 378-meter-high mountain cone that projects into the Werra Valley between Meiningen’s Walldorf district and Meiningen. Landsberg Castle has been owned by a Chinese consortium since 2016, which it plans to continue operating as a hotel.

Lauenstein Castle is located north of Kronach, not far from the Franconian-Thuringian border. The oldest sections of it date back to the 12th century; from the 13th until well into the 15th century the castle was the seat of the once powerful Thuringian counts of Orlamünde. Following their decline it passed through various hands before the castle and territory of Lauenstein were taken over by the lords of Thyna. The main wing with its four corner towers that is named after them was built in 1551–1554 and is a remarkable example of Renaissance palace architecture in central Germany. In the year 1622 the Bayreuth margrave Christian took over the castle; in 1791 it fell to Prussia and in 1803, finally, to Bavaria. Lauenstein Castle passed into private ownership in 1815 and subsequently fell into ruin, until it was bought in 1896 by Dr. Erhard Meßmer, who restored it in the late Historicist style and furnished it in imitation of the Wartburg near Eisenach. This combination of 16th-century architecture with elements of Historicism and Jugendstil is particularly evident in the Orlamünde Hall (entrance hall) and the large Knights’ Hall in the Thyna building. In 1962 the Free State of Bavaria acquired the castle and from 1966 to 1976 extensively restored the whole complex. A comprehensive museum was installed in over 20 rooms of the main castle wing in which armour and weapons together with the furnishings that have been preserved – tiled stoves, pictures and wall and ceiling paintings – authentically recreate castle life in the Middle Ages.

Is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built above the village of Tongwynlais in South Wales. The first castle on the site was built by the Normans after 1081, to protect the newly conquered town of Cardiff and control the route along the Taff Gorge. Abandoned shortly afterwards, the castle's earth motte was reused by Gilbert de Clare as the basis for a new stone fortification, which he built between 1267 and 1277 to control his freshly annexed Welsh lands. This castle was likely destroyed in the native Welsh rebellion of 1314. In 1760, the castle ruins were acquired by John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, as part of a marriage settlement that brought the family vast estates in South Wales.
John Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, inherited the castle in 1848. One of Britain's wealthiest men, with interests in architecture and antiquarian studies, he employed the architect William Burges to reconstruct the castle, "as a country residence for occasional occupation in the summer", using the medieval remains as a basis for the design. Burges rebuilt the outside of the castle between 1875 and 1879, before turning to the interior; he died in 1881 and the work was finished by Burges's remaining team in 1891.
It is now controlled by the Welsh heritage agency Cadw.

Nerola Castle, also known as Orsini Castle, is a medieval fortress in Nerola, near Rome, Italy. Located on Via Aldo Bigelli, it was built in 1070 by Napoleon Orsini and completed by his son Gentil Virginio Orsini in 1085. The castle hosted Emperor Henry IV of the Holy Roman Empire in the same year. The structure, initially designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, features Romanesque-Medieval architecture with a fortified wall and merlons. It has four corner towers, including a circular and a quadrangular one, making it taller and more imposing than its surrounding walls.

It was founded by Beneš von Wartenberg before 1349 as a possible construction site and was completed by his sons Peter and Marquard von Wartenberg in a high gothic style. It retains most of the original features and is overall very well preserved and maintained.
The castle is known for its donjon, so-called Bílá věž (“white tower”), protected by two circles of fortress walls. In 1414 the family of Zajíc von Hasenburg moved there, because Nicolaus von Hasenburg married Skunka, a widow after Peter von Wartenberg. Later the castle was owned by families of Schellenberg (1497–1524), Biberstein (1524–1551), Lobkowicz (till 1576) and others. During centuries some more buildings were built near the castle and joined to it.
Unlike most other castles in Bohemia, it does not lie on a hill, but on a spit between two brooks. Another peculiarity is the tower, which has a trapezoid-like ground-plan. The trapezoidal tower has the corners facing the areas of most likely catapult attacks. This is to make the missiles glance off the tower walls instead of hitting it head on, thereby minimizing damage.
