🧵 Beginner’s Guide to Sewing
1. Basic Supplies You'll Need
Sewing machine (optional at first—hand sewing is fine!)
Needles (hand sewing and/or machine needles)
Thread (polyester or cotton)
Fabric (cotton is best for beginners)
Fabric scissors (don’t use them on paper!)
Pins or clips
Seam ripper (for fixing mistakes)
Measuring tape
Chalk or fabric marker
2. Learn Basic Stitches
Start with hand sewing:
Running stitch – simple and good for basting
Backstitch – strong and good for seams
Whip stitch – good for finishing edges
Slip stitch – for invisible hems
Once you're comfortable, you can try using a sewing machine, which opens up more possibilities.
3. Start with Simple Projects
Practice by making:
Fabric bookmarks
Scrunchies
Pillowcases
Tote bags
Simple elastic skirts
These help you get familiar with cutting fabric, sewing straight lines, and reading simple patterns.
4. Understand Patterns and Measurements
Eventually, you'll want to:
Learn to read basic sewing patterns
Take your measurements properly
Understand seam allowances (usually ⅝”)
