"Archbishop Romero is one of the fathers of the Latin American church. As was the case with the Greek and Latin fathers of antiquity and with Cardinal John Henry Newman more recently, it is important to preserve their words. Only by doing so will their spirits remain alive in many places and endure in the swift currents of time."

A GOD CLOSE TO US

by José Antonio Pagola

Christmas is much more than all the superficial and manipulative things going on around us these days in our neighborhoods. A feast day much deeper and more joyful than all the fads of our consumer society.

We believers must recover again the heart of this feast and look behind so much superficiality and confusion to discover the mystery that gives rise to our joy. We need to learn to «celebrate» Christmas. Not everyone knows what it is we're celebrating. Not everyone knows what it is that opens our heart to such joy.

Yet we will only understand Christmas if we know how to be silent in our heart, and open our soul to the mystery of a God who is close to us, and rejoice with the life that is offered us, and taste the feast of the arrival of God our Friend.

In the midst of our daily life that is too often boring, burnt-out and sad, we are invited to rejoice. «Sadness has no place when life is being born» (St. Leo the Great). We aren't talking about a joy that is insipid or superficial. A joy those have who don't know why they are joyful. «We have cause for a radiant joy, one that is full and suited for the solemn feast: God has become human and has come to live among us» (Leonardo Boff). There is a joy that only can be enjoyed by those who open themselves up to God's closeness and who allow themselves to be drawn by God's tenderness.

A joy that frees us of fears, mistrust and inhibition as we face God. Why fear a God who comes to us as a child? Why avoid One who offers Self as a fragile and defenseless baby? God hasn't come armed with power to impose Self on us humans. God comes close to us in the tenderness of a child whom we can welcome or reject.

God can't be at the same time the «all-powerful» and «mighty» that we suspect when enclosed in the gravity and mystery of an inaccessible world. God is this child given lovingly to humanity, this little one who catches our gaze in order to make us happy with his smile.

The fact that God has become a child says a whole lot more about who God is than all our musings and speculations about God's mystery. If we would know to stop in silence before this child and welcome God's closeness and tenderness from the depths of our being, maybe we would understand why the believer's heart ought to be pierced with a completely different kind of joy during these Christmas days.

Meditation for the Fourteenth Sunday of the Year C

"BEARERS OF THE GOSPEL"
by José Antonio Pagola

In Luke's Gospel we find an important discourse of Jesus, one directed not to the Twelve, but to another large group of disciples whom he sends out in order to collaborate with him on his project of God's reign. Jesus' words constitute a kind of foundational letter that nourishes his followers' evangelizing work. I'll highlight some key lines.

«Get going»

Though we keep forgetting it, the Church is marked by Jesus' sending. That's why it's dangerous to think of it as an institution founded to take care of and develop its own religion. It would be closer to Jesus' original desire to see it as a prophetic movement that travels through history according to the logic of sending: going out of herself, thinking about others, serving the Good News of God in the world. «The Church isn't there for herself, but for humanity» (Benedict XVI).

What's so dangerous today is the temptation to retreat into our own interests, our past, our doctrinal acquisitions, our practices and customs. Even more dangerous if we do so by hardening our relationship with the world. What becomes of the Church if we are rigid, paralyzed, closed in on ourselves, no longer being prophets of Jesus or bearers of the Gospel?

«When you go into a village... cure the sick and say: God's Reign is very near to you»

This is the great news: God is near to us, encouraging us to make life more human. But it's not enough to affirm a truth to make it attractive and desirable. It's necessary to change our way of acting: what is it that can bring people today to the Gospel? how can they catch on to God as something new and good?

Surely we lack love for the world today and we don't know how to reach the hearts of today's men and women. It's not enough to preach sermons from the altar. We need to learn to listen more, welcome, heal the lives of those who suffer...only thus will we find humble and good words that come close to the Jesus whose unfathomable kindness puts us in contact with God, the Good Father of all.

«When you enter a house, say first: Peace to this house»

Jesus' Good News gets communicated with complete respect, from a friendly and fraternal attitude, thus spreading peace. It's wrong to try to impose it from superiority, threat or resentment. It's anti-Gospel to treat people without love just because they don't accept our message. But how will they accept it if they don't feel understood by those of us who present it in Jesus' name?
