The Duffer Brothers’ new series THE BOROUGHS has reportedly already been renewed for Season 2 after exploding in popularity immediately following its Netflix debut.

The sci fi mystery series from the creators behind Stranger Things premiered on May 21 and quickly became one of Netflix’s most talked about new releases, with critics already calling it the streamer’s best original sci fi drama of 2026 so far.

Set inside a retirement community in the New Mexico desert, The Boroughs follows a group of elderly residents who uncover an otherworldly threat secretly feeding on time itself, forcing them to become unlikely heroes against a terrifying supernatural mystery.

What’s making the show hit so hard is how it feels like a darker and more emotional cousin to Stranger Things, replacing teenagers with older characters while still keeping that same mix of friendship, mystery, monsters, and Spielberg style sci fi adventure.

While Netflix has not formally announced Season 2 yet, multiple entertainment outlets are already heavily discussing continuation plans because of the show’s strong early reception, huge online discussion, and immediate breakout success after release.

Tom Hardy has been fired from MobLand and will not return for Season 3 after major behind the scenes clashes during production. Multiple outlets report Hardy allegedly arrived late to set repeatedly, pushed for dialogue rewrites, and frequently gave notes to producers about the direction of the show.

According to reports originating from entertainment insider Matthew Belloni, tensions became so serious between Hardy and producers Jez Butterworth and David Glasser that Paramount reportedly decided not to pick up Hardy’s option for a third season. Some reports even claim Butterworth threatened to leave the show amid the conflicts.
