💔Omg omg omg I feel like my sunshine is gone, I am still in shock from yesterday, I can’t believe I have to write this post. My very close friend, my mentor, my sister, my family - Amber I just can’t accept that you are gone. I can’t believe I won’t be able to talk to you everyday anymore. You didn’t deserve this. Your 3 children didn’t deserve this. This is so unfair and I will continue to fight for your justice. Our whole birthworker community is shook, we are devastated! I can’t keep it together long enough to say what I want to say right now but I am asking everyone to please donate anything you can to her fundraiser. The link is in my bio. Breast milk is liquid gold. It’s your baby’s first vaccine. It is more nutritious than any milk you will find at the store. I always encourage my moms to save their unused breastmilk because you can use it to make for for your baby - and yourself! Baby cereal, smoothies, oatmeal, pancakes - the list goes on. Your breastmilk is incredibly valuable. Don’t waste it. But don’t sell it either.

Breastmilk is also big money maker in the wellness black market. Bodybuilder and other fitness professionals pay big bucks for breast milk. But it raises a lot of safety and ethical issues as well.

When I finished my Doula training, I honestly was left little guidance or direction on how to get started. I was lost. My life was a mess and I wanted to switch careers. I ended up reaching out to Amber on the fly after finding her website online and we connected immediately. We talked for over an hour! Then we had our first lunch date which turned into a full blown beach day! Our vibe was just always on 🙏🏾

Amber was the one who took a chance on me as a new Doula. She truly took me under her wing. Literally the next week, she allowed me to shadow her client visits. She took me to OBGYN meetings with her. She invited me to her births. She got me into maternal health conferences. She introduced me to Miami’s birthworker community. She shared her opportunities with me and even gave me opportunities before herself. She shared her vendor tables with me. She gave me tons of free advice. She told others about my fem health work. She shared my content. She came on my podcast. She came to my events. She constantly encouraged and supported me. She even gave me my very first postpartum Doula job! THIS IS WHAT REAL MENTORSHIP LOOKS LIKE!

J U N E T E E N T H ✊🏾✊🏾 Juneteenth is the oldest celebration of the end of slavery in the US. On June 19, 1865 slaves in Galveston, Texas were finally told of their emancipation and freed. Slave masters intentionally suppressed the news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which was signed two years earlier on January 1, 1863. Juneteenth is also known as Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, and has been widely celebrated amongst African Americans since 1865. Texas was the first state to make Juneteenth a holiday in 1980, and it’s now a recognized holiday in 46 other states. 📚✊🏾Killing the Black Body by Dorothy Roberts is an absolutely mind blowing book and required read for Doulas 🙏🏾❤️ I believe this book should be required reading in every America high school. It was written in 1997 and to this day continues to raise awareness and educate on reproductive racism and the history behind it. Quick facts: Black women are more likely to have poorer experience of healthcare during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum aftercare. We are up to 6x more likely to die in childbirth. We are also more likely to have traumatic birth experiences in general.

Quick truth: WHAT POLICE DO TO BLACK MEN DOCTORS DO TO BLACK WOMEN. As a Doula, I am honored to educate and protect my black mamas and babies. If you are a pregnant women of color please consider getting a Birth Doula. Many of us are now covered by Medicaid insurance providers, offer sliding scale payments or have scholarships. ❤️This is my 4-year son Nasir. He is a black boy with a Muslim name (his grandfather is from Palestine) and first generation American parents. It makes me sad that every time he steps outside he could be in danger just because of the color of his skin or be judged by his name. The reality, is once he leaves my house no one cares about him but me. NO ONE. It is a conversation we have almost every day. I hate it. Even though America is full of opportunity, I wonder if it’s worth the daily fear, pain and mental anguish we have to deal with each day. Growing up I never understood why my parents even chose to stay here. I want to leave so bad. My son deserves so much more. He shouldn’t have to deal with this in 2020. My mothers and babies of color I know you feel me. I’m in tears again now so time to get off IG for a bit. Stay safe my loves 🙏🏾

Each time a Black woman dies before, during or after birth - my heart literally feels like it's been stabbed. Unique Clay tested positive for COVID - 19 during childbirth yet she was discharged days later. According to , "she told her oldest daughter to get her inhaler, because she couldn’t breathe. When the 11-year-old came back her, mother was dead." Her father informed the media that the virus was aggressive. He questioned why the hospital discharged her but hasn't received any answers. Unique was the 1st Postal worker to die from COVID - 19. However if the University of Chicago Medical Center would have done their jobs, Unique would still be here. And USPS wouldn't have a statistic.
This is another example of why Black pregnant women need advocates with them during birth & after. Doulas are essential workers. No, we are not medical professionals however we have a power that can't be matched. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) & the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend that pregnant women hire Doulas. This advice must be put into practice ASAP. Black women cannot afford to keep dying!

This day has different meanings for all of us. Happiness, loss, reflection, anger, gratitude, hope, fear, love and excitement all come to mind. It can be joyful or sad or a little bit of both.

Some of us are new moms with new babies, some of us are experienced moms. Some of us are patiently waiting for baby to arrive. Some of us may have lost a baby. Some of us had to pause fertility plans. Some of us may have decided not to have a baby.

Some of us have a great relationship with our own mother, some of us have no relationship at all. Some of us may not know who our mom is. Some of us have living mothers to celebrate, while some of us will celebrate a memory. Some of us won’t feel like celebrating at all. And that is ok.
