Help with refinished floors… because I genuinely don’t know if I’m being too picky or if this job was done wrong. 😅

We recently bought a house with the original pine floors, and they’re about 94 years old. We had them refinished, and today we finally got to see how they turned out.

The problem is the stain/finish looks really uneven in spots. The flooring company says it’s because of the age of the floors and because they picked up some of the old stain. They also said they couldn’t sand much farther down.

But this is supposedly the first time these floors have ever been refinished, and the darker blotchy patterns were not there before.

I got a second opinion, and that person said it looks like they didn’t sand far enough and applied the stain poorly — almost like it was dumped heavier on one side and then spread out, leaving a big settled stain area.

So now I’m stuck between two completely different opinions.

People with flooring experience, does this look like normal character from old pine floors, or does it look like a bad sanding/staining job?

Also ignore the walls… that’s the next headache. 😭

Wife wants a pantry… so now I’m mentally framing walls in the garage. 😂

I’m thinking the cheapest way to make it happen would be to build the pantry into part of the garage. I’m okay losing the space because both cars would still fit just fine, and honestly it seems way more practical than trying to rework the kitchen.

The part I’m not sure about is the support. For the two outside posts, would I need to dig actual footings, or would some type of bracket anchored into the existing garage slab be enough?

The garage itself is already sitting on footings that are 60 inches deep, so I’m trying to figure out if this pantry build needs its own footing situation or if anchoring to the slab is acceptable for something like this.

I’m trying to keep it budget-friendly, but I also don’t want to build something wrong and regret it later.

Anyone here built a pantry or small room into a garage before? Would you anchor the posts to the slab, or dig footings and do it the more serious way?

The things ya don’t wanna see when that trailer door opens. 🤣

You already know the second someone pulled that door up, everybody got real quiet for a minute.

That pallet is leaning like it heard bad news, the boxes are doing their own thing, and the whole load looks like it survived three sharp turns, two potholes, and one driver saying, “It’ll ride.”

This is exactly the kind of scene where nobody wants to be the first person to touch anything because the second you move one board, the whole thing might decide it’s time to finish falling.

And of course the customer won’t take it unless it’s on a pallet… well, technically it’s still on a pallet. Just emotionally damaged. 😂

Be honest… are you unloading this carefully, or closing the door and pretending you didn’t see it?

Original risers vs painted… and now I can’t unsee it. 😅

We just had the staircase sanded and coated with Bona Classic Seal, and I love how much lighter and cleaner the steps look now. But the risers were left untouched, and their original orange tone is standing out way more in person than it does in pictures.

Now I’m stuck debating whether to leave the natural wood contrast or paint the risers white for a cleaner, more updated look.

Part of me likes the character, but the other part of me thinks the white risers would make the whole staircase look brighter and more finished.

Be honest… would you leave the original risers, or paint them white?

🧀🍇 My first grazing charcuterie table!

I was so happy with how this came together. From the cheeses, cured meats, crackers, fruits, dips, and fresh herbs to the little floral details, every section was arranged with so much care. ✨

I wanted the table to feel abundant, colorful, and inviting — something guests could enjoy while discovering a little bit of everything.

Such a fun first experience, and definitely something I would love to create again. 🤍

$10k to replace 12 square meters of tiles with engineered spotted gum flooring? Fair?
Located in Melb, wanting to replace the tiles in a section of flooring that is essentially a 6x2m rectangle, with engineered spotted gum timber, same as the photo. Sent out a bunch of emails requesting quotes to different companies.

Received the first quote with one of the company manager's approximations on costs:

Labour to remove existing floor tiles and prep the substrate ready for overlay flooring - $2000

Supply and install new overlay engineered spotted gum flooring - $1200

Paint touchups and caulk - $1200

Builders clean to the workspace and surrounding areas - $1200

Rubbish removal - $500

Builders margin and warranties - $3000

Total: $9150 + GST

^Is the above fairish, or would I be getting taken to the cleaners if I go with this company? I'll check the other quotes too and compare, just after some additional opinions.

Thanks

I genuinely don’t understand the obsession with doing things "the old way" when it’s clearly just an excuse to be inefficient. Watching someone spend hours on a single detail that a machine could handle in seconds is the ultimate display of misplaced priorities. It’s not craftsmanship if you’re just stubbornly refusing to evolve, and honestly, seeing people praise this kind of "dedication" while real progress is happening elsewhere is just exhausting. You aren’t building a legacy; you’re just wasting your life for a few likes on the internet.

It’s honestly pathetic how people romanticize their little "backyard views" like they’re living some kind of curated, peaceful life. While you’re sitting there taking pictures of flowers and waiting for a "bonus visitor," the rest of the world is actually doing something productive. It’s not a hobby; it’s a distraction from the fact that your life is stagnant, and posting this just proves you have nothing better to do than seek validation for existing.
