Icon of the Seas passengers are getting an unusual start to their cruise this weekend. The ship will board guests as scheduled on Saturday, September 26, but remain docked in Miami overnight for required maintenance. It’s now expected to depart at 4 PM on Sunday.

Guests can enjoy the ship while it’s in port and head back into Miami if they want. Onboard shops and the casino will stay closed until the ship sails.

The extra time in Miami means Icon will skip its planned stop in Costa Maya. Roatán and Cozumel are still on the itinerary, and the ship is scheduled to return to Miami on October 3.

Royal Caribbean is offering refundable onboard credit for the change: $300 for interior and oceanview cabins, $350 for balconies, and $800 for suites, plus $50 for each third or fourth guest.

A cruise ship can arrive in port with over 7,000 passengers in the morning and leave with different 7,000 passengers that same afternoon. What happens in between is called turnaround day, and there’s a lot going on at once!

As guests disembark, their luggage is unloaded. Crew members clean and prepare the cabins, change linens, and get restaurants and public spaces ready. Meanwhile, food, drinks and other supplies are brought aboard, new luggage is loaded, and the next passengers begin checking in at the terminal.

By the time you walk up the gangway to debark, the ship is already being prepared for another voyage. It takes the ship’s crew, port workers and terminal staff working together to make that same-day departure happen.

Next time you board a cruise, take a look at everything moving on the pier! It’s only part of the work happening behind the scenes!

Explora Journeys is planning to enter the River Cruise market!

The MSC Group luxury brand has signed a letter of intent with Den Breejen Shipyard to build its first river cruise ships, with plans to sail on some of Europe’s most iconic rivers.

We don’t have a ship count, launch date, or itineraries yet, but Explora says it will share more details later, and bookings are expected to open in 2027.

With Celebrity Cruises also entering the river cruise market, it’s interesting to see more ocean cruise brands making this move.

Royal Caribbean Group has signed an agreement to acquire a 50% stake in Sandals and Beaches Resorts for approximately $3 billion.

The new joint venture brings Royal Caribbean into the all-inclusive resort industry and includes Sandals’ 17 adults-only Caribbean resorts, along with two family-friendly Beaches properties.

Royal Caribbean CEO Jason Liberty and Sandals Executive Chairman Adam Stewart will share leadership of the joint venture’s board. Stewart will remain actively involved in the company’s long-term growth, while the partnership provides additional resources to help Sandals and Beaches expand and reach more travelers.

Existing reservations, loyalty programs, resort operations and Royal Caribbean’s cruise operations will continue as usual.

The transaction is expected to close in early 2027, subject to the required approvals and closing conditions.
