Gays With Kids A GWK Academy Community We did this by sharing their stories—creating visibility, building community, and celebrating the many ways gay men become parents.

From Storytelling to a Non-Profit Supporting All LGBTQ+ Families

When we launched G**s With Kids in March 2014, our mission was clear: to support gay men on their journey to parenthood and help gay dads navigate fatherhood. In 2022, we took our commitment a step further with the launch of GWK Academy. This initiative provided structured education and expert guidance to help gay men understand the

ir various paths to parenthood and prepare them for their chosen journey before getting started. Today, our mission has grown even broader. As a non-profit, we proudly introduce GWK Academy Family Building, Inc., expanding our family-building resources and support to the entire LGBTQ+ community. Our goal is to educate, empower, and guide all q***r people on their path to parenthood—ensuring every LGBTQ+ person has the resources and support they need to make their family-building dreams come true.

In a time when visibility and support matter more than ever, celebrating and uplifting LGBTQ+ families helps ensure every parent, child, and loved one feels seen, valued, and embraced for exactly who they are.

Family Spotlight ✨

Adrian and Shane’s story began in 2013 at a volleyball clinic in Austin, Texas - though their first interaction was anything but smooth. Adrian, helping run the clinic, tried to strike up a conversation while teaching passing drills, but Shane, more introverted, responded with a simple nod. A few days later, Shane reached out online, and after months of conversation and a few dates, their relationship took off. They married in 2017 and now live in Dallas, Texas.

From the beginning, they were aligned in their goals: marriage and parenthood. In 2019, after exploring different paths, they chose to pursue foster care adoption - deeply influenced by Adrian’s work in education and his connection to students navigating the foster system. Today, they’re proud dads to Isaiah (17), Jordan (15), and Sophia (9).

Parenthood, for them, is about growth - watching three unique individuals develop into kind, resilient humans. They’ve embraced every stage, celebrating successes and learning through challenges together. The reality, though, is that raising kids takes time and energy, often leaving little space in their day - but they remain intentional about showing up for their children and each other.

Their journey hasn’t been without barriers. Navigating the foster system in Texas meant facing bias and missed opportunities, but they persisted. At home, they prioritize open conversations, encouraging their kids to think freely and embrace who they are.

Their advice: keep going. There will be setbacks, but with patience, healing, and support, it’s all worth it.

Happy Pride Month from all of us at GWK!

Pride is a celebration of love, identity, visibility, and community — but it’s also a reminder of the strength, resilience, and progress of those who came before us and those continuing the fight for equality today.

At GWK, we are proud to continue amplifying the stories of LGBTQ families, parents, and caregivers from across our community. Since day one, our mission has been rooted in visibility and representation because every family deserves to be seen, valued, and celebrated.

This month and every month, we celebrate the joy of living authentically, loving openly, and building community together.

Here’s to Pride, to family, and to showing up for one another. 💛

We want to celebrate with you all month long - tag in your Pride posts, family photos, celebrations, and moments of joy so we can share and uplift our community together

We have something important to share.

GWK Academy is at a turning point. After more than a decade of building community, educating LGBTQ+ hopeful parents, and making sure our families are seen and celebrated, we’re growing into a stronger, more sustainable nonprofit, anchored by a founding board that will help carry this mission forward.

This June, we’re asking the community we’ve built to help fund that transition. Our goal is $10,000, and every contribution matters.

If GWK or GWK Academy has been part of your journey, please pay it forward. Or if you’re just grateful that we exist, please show your support.

Family Spotlight ✨

Joey and Rich’s story began in 2017 at a Pride fundraiser - fitting for a couple whose life together would be rooted in love, community, and intention. They married in 2020 and call Fort Lauderdale, Florida home, where they’re raising their two children, Zach (4) and Lily (7 months), both born through surrogacy.

From early in their relationship, they were aligned in their dream of becoming parents. Through attending Men Having Babies conferences and doing their research, they found a path that felt right for them. With the support of their agency, Family Formers, they began building their family with guidance every step of the way.

Parenthood has brought them immeasurable joy - especially in the everyday moments. Whether it’s watching their kids’ personalities take shape or dedicating weekends fully to family time, being present with Zach and Lily is what matters most. Like many parents, balancing it all - work, routines, and the constant motion of family life - can be challenging.

Their journey hasn’t been without obstacles. During Zach’s birth, they faced confusion and complications at the hospital due to a lack of understanding around their family structure, making an already stressful situation even more difficult. Still, they navigated it together and came out stronger.

At home, they focus on raising their children with openness, surrounding them with books and examples that celebrate all kinds of families.

Their advice: expect the unexpected. The path to parenthood may not be smooth, but with preparation, patience, and support, it’s absolutely worth it.

Family Spotlight ✨

Patrick and Thomas have been building their life together since 2004, after meeting at the Polo Lounge nightclub in Glasgow. What started as a night out turned into a lasting partnership, and today they’re engaged and raising their family in Glasgow, Scotland.

Their path to parenthood began in 2013, when a local campaign by Glasgow City Council featured same-sex couples and encouraged adoption. Seeing themselves represented sparked something meaningful - it showed them that becoming dads was not only possible, but within reach. Two years later, in 2015, they welcomed twin boys Allan and William through foster care adoption.

Life as a family of four is full, busy, and deeply rewarding. Coming home to two happy boys excited to see them is a daily highlight. Parenthood has also come with its challenges - Allan is on the autism spectrum, which can bring difficult moments - but watching him grow, learn, and succeed has been incredibly meaningful. It’s those victories, big and small, that make everything worth it.

While Patrick’s’ traditional Catholic upbringing initially made their journey more complex, simply living openly and authentically has helped shift perspectives over time. At home, their family dynamic is straightforward - two dads raising two boys - and it’s something their children accept naturally.

For Patrick and Thomas, being fathers brings purpose, joy, and a sense of looking forward. Their advice to others is simple: go for it. The journey may not always be easy, but it’s one they wouldn’t change for anything.

Family Spotlight ✨

Robby and David’s story began in 2008 when they met as freshmen at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. There was an instant connection, and by 2012, they were married and building a life together. Today, they live in Willoughby Hills, Ohio, as proud dads to their 10-year-old twins, Evan and Joanna, who joined their family through foster care adoption.

From early on, both knew they wanted to create a family rooted in love, stability, and the kind of care they wished for in their own childhoods. Their journey began unexpectedly when they were briefly matched with an expectant mother considering adoption. Although that plan changed, it sparked something deeper - they were ready. Within weeks, they enrolled in foster care classes, and just six months later, they were licensed. Only one week after that, Evan and Joanna entered their lives. After two years of fostering, their adoption was finalized.

Parenthood has been both rewarding and complex. Watching their children grow - especially overcoming challenges like ADHD and oppositional defiance disorder - has been one of their greatest joys. At the same time, navigating conversations about biological families without always having answers has been one of their biggest challenges. Through it all, they lead with honesty, love, and reassurance.

As a proud in*******al LGBTQ+ family, they’ve embraced what makes them unique and passed that pride on to their children. Their advice: build a strong support system. Community, connection, and shared understanding can make all the difference on the journey to parenthood.

Family Spotlight ✨

Joshua and Jeremy’s story is one of unexpected beginnings, resilience, and deep love. The two have been together since 2011 and married in 2015, building their life in Charlotte, North Carolina. Their journey began in an unconventional way - Jeremy was the best man at Joshua’s wedding to his former wife.

Over time, their connection grew into something more, ultimately leading them to the life and family they share today.

From early in their relationship, they both knew they wanted children. Inspired by the joy of spending time with nieces, nephews, and younger siblings, they dreamed of creating a family of their own. Through adoption, that dream became a reality. Their son, Anakin (9), joined their family through an agency, followed by their daughter, Izley (8), through a private adoption.

Their path wasn’t without heartbreak. Before Anakin and Izley, they welcomed a baby girl into their home for seven days, only to have the adoption fall through under difficult circumstances. The experience was deeply discouraging and led them to step back for a time. But with patience, reflection, and hope, they found their way forward - ultimately leading them to the family they were meant to have.

Today, the best parts of parenthood are found in the little moments: first experiences, joyful milestones, warm handholds, and endless snuggles. Like many parents, they find it hardest to watch their children struggle, knowing some lessons must be learned on their own.

Joshua and Jeremy are intentional about teaching their children that families come in many forms, but love is what defines them. Their advice to others is simple: there may never be a perfect time - take the leap, build your support system, and trust that the journey is worth it.
