When we launched G**s With Kids in March 2014, our mission was clear: to support gay men on their journey to parenthood and help gay dads navigate fatherhood. In 2022, we took our commitment a step further with the launch of GWK Academy. This initiative provided structured education and expert guidance to help gay men understand the

ir various paths to parenthood and prepare them for their chosen journey before getting started. Today, our mission has grown even broader. As a non-profit, we proudly introduce GWK Academy Family Building, Inc., expanding our family-building resources and support to the entire LGBTQ+ community. Our goal is to educate, empower, and guide all q***r people on their path to parenthood—ensuring every LGBTQ+ person has the resources and support they need to make their family-building dreams come true.

Family Spotlight ✨

This August, Jesus and John will celebrate 20 years together - a journey that began long before dating apps, when online chat rooms were the place to meet. After Jesus moved to his hometown of Corpus Christi, he messaged someone whose profile featured a dolphin. A week later, they went bowling for their first date, and nearly two decades later, they’re still laughing about that unforgettable dolphin profile picture.
Today, they live in San Antonio and are proud dads to Daníí (4) and Kríístian (2), who joined their family through surrogacy.

Parenthood had always been part of their conversations, but after 16 years together, the timing finally aligned. Following an IVF and surrogacy conference, a close friend offered to become their surrogate—an extraordinary gift that made it possible for them to become dads not once, but twice.

Their greatest joy is watching their children grow into their own unique personalities while making sure they feel loved, accepted, and supported every day. One of the biggest challenges has been remembering not to lose themselves in the process. Between parenting, work, and life, they’ve learned that nurturing their relationship is just as important as raising their children.

Their path wasn’t without obstacles. Conceiving their second child proved far more difficult than their first journey, teaching them that every family-building experience is different. Their advice: give yourself grace, take breaks when needed, and trust that it’s okay if the journey doesn’t unfold exactly as planned.
At home, they teach their children that families come in many forms - two dads, two moms, one parent, stepparents - and that love is what truly defines a family.

For LGBTQ+ hopeful parents, their message is simple: be patient with yourself and your partner. “Children don’t come with instruction manuals,” they say. “You’re learning together, so give yourselves grace.”

Looking back, they know one thing for certain: parenthood is challenging, but watching your children grow into even better versions of yourselves makes every step of the journey worthwhile.

Family Spotlight ✨

Tyler and Kevin are newlyweds, having married in 2025, and are already embracing their newest and favorite roles: dads. The couple lives in Foley, Alabama, with their son, Ridley James Bonner, who is just 28 days old and has already transformed their world.

Parenthood was always part of the plan. From a young age, Tyler knew he wanted children, and once he and Kevin began building a life together, they set a shared goal: buy a home where they could one day raise a family. When they reached that milestone, they knew it was time to start filling those empty bedrooms.
Their journey to parenthood took an unexpected but beautiful turn. Initially pursuing adoption, everything changed when Kevin’s sister generously offered to become their gestational carrier. That incredible gift opened the door to IVF and surrogacy, allowing them to welcome Ridley James into the world.

Only a few weeks into fatherhood, they’ve already discovered a love unlike anything they could have imagined. Simply looking at their son each day has given them a whole new understanding of unconditional love. Like many new parents, they’re also learning how to balance sleepless nights, careers, and making time for each other as partners while adjusting to life with a newborn.

As an LGBTQ+ family, they hope to raise Ridley James knowing that love is what makes a family. Rather than focusing on what makes them different, they want him to see that they are simply a family built on the same love, care, and commitment as any other.

Their advice to future LGBTQ+ parents is to take the journey one step at a time. Set goals, be patient, and trust the process. “It may be the hardest thing you’ll ever do,” they say, “but it’s also the most rewarding.”

Theo and Robert’s love story began 12 years ago after meeting through a mutual friend at a rave in California’s Bay Area. Today, the couple has been happily married for seven years and lives in Newark, California, with their two children, Oliver (3) and Brooklyn (10 months), who joined their family through surrogacy.

For Theo and Robert, becoming parents was always part of the dream. Growing up in a Catholic environment, Theo wasn’t always sure fatherhood would be possible, but the desire never faded. When they learned they had surrogacy benefits through work and found themselves surrounded by strong examples of loving families, they knew it was time to take the next step. Feeling both emotionally and financially ready, they began their journey to parenthood.

One of their favorite parts of being dads happens after dinner, when the music comes on and the family gathers for impromptu dance parties. Watching Oliver and Brooklyn light up with joy and laughter creates some of their most cherished memories. Like many parents, balancing full-time careers while raising young children can be challenging, but they embrace the chaos and rewards that come with family life.

As an LGBTQ+ family, they’ve found themselves frequently explaining how surrogacy works and educating others about the many ways families are formed. They approach those moments with patience and openness, recognizing that visibility helps create greater understanding.

They celebrate their family by proudly sharing their story and teaching their children that families come in all shapes and sizes. Their advice to other LGBTQ+ people dreaming of parenthood: “Roll with the punches and don’t take it personally when people don’t understand your journey. Stay focused on the family you’re building.”

Theo and Robert are especially grateful for the support they received from Same Love Surrogacy and RMA of Northern California, whose guidance helped make their dream of becoming dads a reality.

Family Spotlight ✨

Carlos and Richard have been building a life together for more than two decades and, as they like to joke, they’ve been married to each other three different times. Their journey includes a commitment ceremony in 2005, a civil union in 2012, and finally a legal marriage in 2015. Today, they live in Colorado with their two children, Devon (9) and Josephine (8), who joined their family through closed adoption.

Working in education and medicine, both always knew they wanted to be parents. Rather than waiting for the “perfect” moment, they embraced the advice their own parents gave them: the right time never comes - opportunities do. When the opportunity to adopt came along, they took it, and never looked back.

Watching their children grow into confident, capable individuals has been the greatest joy of parenthood. At the same time, helping them navigate challenges - including special needs - has taught them resilience, patience, and the importance of showing up every single day.

Their family has also experienced the realities of navigating life as an LGBTQ+ family, including relocating from a more conservative state to Colorado. Through it all, they’ve taught their children that their family is unique, full of love, and something to be proud of.

Their advice to other LGBTQ+ people dreaming of parenthood: trust the process. It may feel long and frustrating, but it’s worth every step. Lean on your community, use every resource available, and don’t be afraid to seek guidance from experienced professionals, including a good adoption attorney.
Their family lives by one simple philosophy: “Be you and be the family you are. We strive to be both the parents we had - and the parents we needed.”

Family Spotlight ✨

Andrew and Jeremy’s story began in Fargo, North Dakota, where the two met at a bar while attending separate colleges in the same city. Together since 2012 and married in 2017, they’ve built a life grounded in love, humor, and a shared dream of becoming dads. Today, they’re raising their 3-year-old daughter, Mari, through adoption.

Adoption always felt deeply personal to them. Andrew’s father was adopted, so the path to parenthood already felt familiar and meaningful long before they officially began the process. Both Andrew and Jeremy knew they wanted children before they even met each other. Once they felt financially ready, they decided it was time to press “go” and begin growing their family.

For them, one of the most meaningful parts of parenting is honoring the incredible trust placed in them by Mari’s birth parent. “It’s the highest honor of our lives,” they share. They also treasure the everyday moments - the constant cuddles, the laughter, and helping guide Mari as she grows into herself.

Like many parents, patience can sometimes be the hardest part. They’ve learned the importance of slowing down, remembering how young children see the world, and focusing on intent rather than perfection.

As a family, they openly celebrate LGBTQ+ visibility through books, Pride events, and conversations about all the different ways families are built. Their advice to other LGBTQ+ people considering adoption: “Be honest with your child at every age, no matter how young. And remember - being chosen to love and raise a child is one of life’s greatest privileges.”

Family Spotlight ✨

Josh and Benny’s love story began on January 3, 2013 - a true Grindr success story. Josh’s profile read, “tell me what makes you unique,” while Benny’s highlighted five words: “Family, Friends, Travel…” Their first coffee date at a local café lasted until closing time, followed by hours driving around town just talking. Less than two years later they were engaged, married in 2016, and on January 13, 2022, they officially became dads to their son, Ari.

Now living in Minneapolis, the couple built their family through domestic infant adoption after initially exploring international adoption and encountering significant barriers. Parenthood had always been part of the conversation - even on their very first date. Just months after getting married, they began the home study process, knowing adoption could take years. They were right: after nearly five years of paperwork, waiting, hope, heartbreak, and perseverance, Ari came into their lives.

For Josh, some of the most meaningful moments happen at bedtime - after the books are read and lights are off, when Ari shares his biggest thoughts, questions, and excitement about the world. For Benny, joy comes through adventures together: sporting events, travel, and building memories as a family.

The couple has been intentional about honoring Ari’s adoption story through a beautifully open adoption with his birth family. Every May, they celebrate “Family Day” - the anniversary of Ari’s legal adoption - by gathering with his biological family, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. “People often say Ari is lucky,” they share, “but honestly, we feel like the lucky ones.”

Family Spotlight ✨

Trevor, a single dad living in Washington, DC, works in Educational Technology and is proudly raising his 4-year-old twins, Annie and Ollie, through surrogacy. While he and his ex-husband are no longer together, they continue to successfully co-parent and remain committed to creating a loving, supportive environment for their children.

Fatherhood was always part of Trevor’s vision for his life. Long before becoming a parent himself, years spent working as a teacher only deepened his desire to build a family. “I always knew I wanted to be a dad,” he shares, and once the timing felt right, he fully embraced the journey to parenthood.

For Trevor, one of the greatest joys of parenting is seeing the world through his children’s eyes. Whether it’s excitement over the smallest discoveries or the wonder they bring to everyday moments, Annie and Ollie constantly remind him to slow down and appreciate life differently. At the same time, parenting has also taught him that there’s no single “right” way to raise children. Balancing love, guidance, and boundaries is something he continues to learn every day.

Trevor makes a point to celebrate and normalize their LGBTQ+ family identity through inclusive books, friendships with other gay families, and being part of a diverse school community.

His advice to other LGBTQ+ people dreaming of parenthood: lean on your community. “It’s a journey,” he says, “but a beautiful one. Talk to other families who’ve already walked the path and let people support you along the way.”
