On February 2, 1927, Stanley Gayetsky, a son of Jewish immigrants from Kiev was born in Philadelphia.
His parents bought him a saxophone and a clarinet when he was 13, sparking his passion for music.
A son of immigrants Stanley Gayetsky turned at in young age to Stan Getz, often referred to as "The Sound," 5-time Grammy Award Winner, an American jazz saxophonist whose warm, lyrical tone on the tenor saxophone enchanted audiences around the world, and became one of the most influential figures in jazz.
Getz performed with giants such as Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, and Oscar Peterson.
One of Getz's most significant contributions to music came in the early 1960s when he helped popularize bossa nova, a Brazilian genre that blends samba and jazz. His collaboration with Brazilian musicians João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim produced the Grammy Award-winning album "Getz/Gilberto," which included the iconic track "The Girl from Ipanema." This song became a major hit and introduced Bossa Nova to a global audience.
Fighting with many addictions, Stan Getz was 64 when died of liver cancer on June 6, 1991. His ashes were poured from his saxophone case six miles off the coast of Marina del Rey, California.
