Indirect Injection (IDI) Diesel Engine

In an indirect injection diesel engine, fuel is not injected directly into the main cylinder combustion space. Instead, the injector sprays fuel into a small pre-combustion chamber located in the cylinder head. During compression, air is forced into this chamber, creating intense turbulence. When fuel is injected, combustion starts in the pre-chamber and then expands into the main cylinder through a narrow passage.

The unique piston crown design helps guide airflow and supports the combustion process as the burning gases enter the main cylinder. This system provides smoother and quieter engine operation compared to early direct-injection diesels.
