in 1943: 81 years ago, nearly 18,000 of the 2d Marine Division stormed ashore on Tarawa Atoll, launching Operation Galvanic and a brutal fight for control of the Gilbert Islands.

Their mission was to seize strategically vital airfields, but the ocean itself became an enemy. Unforeseen low tides trapped landing craft on treacherous reefs, forcing the Marines to wade hundreds of yards under withering fire.

Against all odds, they clawed their way onto a narrow beachhead, a foothold won in blood. For days, they battled a tenacious foe entrenched in fortified bunkers and hidden machine gun nests.

By November 23rd, 1943, Tarawa was secured but at a cost. More than 1,000 Marines paid the ultimate price, and nearly 2,000 more were wounded.

The Battle of Tarawa was a crucible. The hard-learned lessons, bought with courage and sacrifice, helped shape future amphibious operations throughout the remainder of World War II, ensuring that future generations would benefit from their bravery.
