🚢 Aircraft carriers are described as the “centrepiece” of US naval forces — mobile airfields that can operate forward in crisis.
The Ford‑class introduced new launch + recovery systems:
• EMALS (electromagnetic catapult) instead of steam catapults
• Advanced arresting gear for recoveries
The Navy has also said preliminary sortie‑generation reports suggest the flight deck design, together with EMALS and advanced arresting gear, has contributed to a higher sortie generation rate compared to Nimitz‑class carriers (with ongoing analysis).
