Steamboat Willie was the first appearance of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, but it was actually the third Mickey short to be produced. It was the first to receive public distribution beyond test screenings and the first Mickey Mouse cartoon ever to be released. He would later transfer the drawing to a wooden block with carbon paper. From those wooden blocks, he then produced copper plates for printing. I'm familiar with this process.
