I would like to recognize the Wadleigh Memorial Library Trustees for their dedication of time and energy in support of the library renovation/expansion project. I am proud to work at Wadleigh, but family and home commitments limit my availability to participate in library causes. The Trustees face similar competing demands for their attention, and yet choose to spend their time working to improve Wadleigh for the entire community. They are the ones who wrestle the complex issues facing the Library, make appropriate choices and policies, and represent the institution at multiple meetings Library and Town meetings. During the recent voting cycle they maintained a presence at the polls, distributed fliers and engaged residents at the transfer station, held signs in the oval and went out of their way to promote understanding. Sadly, the Cabinet has given a strong impression of being on a crusade against those seeking to support efforts to renovate Wadleigh. As well as featuring articles dissecting library statistics and cherry-picking words like “café” from the renovation plans, they offered no concession to balance by printing a letter favorable to the proposal that was submitted by a library patron in response to the Cabinet’s front page attack of February 27th. The Cabinet also chose not to print a letter drafted by the Wadleigh Library Trustees in response to the same article, instead sharing excerpts and only making the full text available online. Given the position the publication has taken, I will not be submitting this letter to them for consideration. Why the negativity and vitriol in the newspaper and online forums targeting honest ambitions to improve a valued community resource? It is all so unnecessary and disproportionate. If residents do not wish to support something, they have every right and opportunity to exercise their preference. Voting is supposed to be the civic culmination of a civilized and fact-based discussion of issues. I would also like to thank the Library's Director, Betsy Solon. She has worked tirelessly to make Wadleigh a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone. She insists that all of us at the Library put the needs of patrons first, be it helping find a book or article, providing information or assisting with the countless functions that define a modern library. She has established a passport program that has generated needed revenue in the last year. She has instituted Movie Mondays which have proved extremely popular with town seniors. She has brought a vision to Milford which inspires her staff and makes me proud to work with her. I was born and raised in Revere, Massachusetts. My Mom had family locally going back two generations and my initial exposure to Milford came when I was 14, walking the railroad tracks to the IGA and bicycling with my Dad. When I moved to town in 1999, the most welcoming experience I had – one which made a distinct and lasting impression on me – was the first time I visited Wadleigh Memorial Library with my four-year old daughter. I would wish for all people, residents and visitors alike, to find in Wadleigh the promise of community and fellowship that I have seen sustained through the last two decades. Sincerely, Theresa M McKillop
