Good morning, welcome to Crystal Thursday. If you haven’t already noticed, the further we get into the feldspar family tree the more interesting the stones are. This week we are four stones into our moonstone exploration with Black Moonstone. Like other family members this beauty was adored for centuries. Long before anyone understood what a feldspar is.
One of the things that make it interesting is that in some circles there is an ongoing question about whether it is, in fact, a moonstone or a labradorite. Some sources associate Black Moonstone with the 1770 discovery of Labradorite in Labrador, Canada. However, much of the documented historical record refers specifically to Labradorite, and the history of Black Moonstone as a distinct variety is less clear.
The primary locations for quality pieces are Madagascar and India, but other sources are Sri Lanka, Norway, Mexico, and Ukraine. The black in this moonstone is the result of inclusions of minerals like iron oxide, magnetite, or hematite but the color is not always a black as one might expect. It can range from grey to charcoal to black. It’s not unusual to see lines of brown or grey and the familiar layered silver and blue moonstone sheen. As with the other moonstone in this family tree the Mohs scale of hardness is 6 to 6.5. The chakra associations are root and crown with the third eye connection to the family.
While Black Moonstone shares intuitive and reflective qualities of the family, the presence of iron-bearing minerals like magnetite or hematite gives it a noticeably different character. Many people find Black Moonstone more grounding and protective, as though its energy anchors the wisdom of moonstone firmly in the physical world. This grounded energy combined with moonstones intuitive qualities may help people working with it find a way through emotional issues and be more confident in their ability to accomplish goals.
Black Moonstone teaches us that wisdom does not have to drift among the clouds. Sometimes the most meaningful insights are the ones rooted firmly under our feet. Its glow reminds us that strength, intuition, and growth can exist together.
