When toddlers stomp their feet, clap their hands, jump, or imitate sounds, they’re doing more than having fun, they’re building important foundations for communication and language development.

Through movement and imitation, children begin learning how to watch, respond, participate, and connect meaning to actions and sounds. These shared experiences help strengthen attention, engagement, memory, and connection!

Small playful routines like saying “neigh” while stomping or “quack” while waddling may seem simple, but they can support communication development in powerful ways.

At Ninewise, we believe learning grows through connection, interaction, and play. That’s why we created a free movement printable and a full blog post to help families bring these meaningful moments into everyday routines!

We’re so grateful to have attended the WFCCA (Wisconsin Family Child Care Association) Early Childhood Conference and spent time with family child care providers and early childhood educators from across Wisconsin!

Kelly LeGrand, our Director of Education & Community Outreach, represented Ninewise and shared our books throughout the event. Participants at the conference were lucky to see an exclusive early release of our new upcoming book, Neigh Quack Moo before it went on presale!

It was a really meaningful couple of days connecting with educators, sharing our full collection, and talking about early literacy, sound play, and the little everyday moments that help support language development in young children.

We’re so grateful for everyone who stopped by, picked up a book, and shared their time. Follow us for more from our early literacy journey and the work we’re sharing with educators! 🌱📚

Babies don’t start language with words, they start with sounds and imitation. Sounds like “moo,” “baa,” and “quack” are part of early speech and language development, and they show up during the babbling stage long before real words appear.

This kind of sound play for babies can really help build communication skills through repetition, turn-taking, and early vocal exploration. Little moments like these are how language begins to take shape!

If you want to learn more about why this works (and how to try it at home), we break it down in our newest article, “How Sound Play Helps Babies Start Talking.” Link in bio!
