He was just fourteen when his mother passed away suddenly, leaving him rebellious, angry, and grieving. He was a self-described disaster. But sitting not far from him was a twelve-year-old girl named Ali Stewart.
She did not see a future rock star; she just saw a boy who needed someone to look out for him. Long before fame changed everything, Ali was the one making sure he ate, walking him to school, and washing his clothes. She knew him before the world did.
They met at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin when Paul Hewson, who the world now knows as Bono, was just thirteen and Ali was twelve.
The sudden loss of his mother, Iris, who collapsed from a brain aneurysm at her own father's funeral, left the young boy completely unanchored, heartbroken, and deeply traumatized.
Ali became his stabilizing force, stepping in to care for him during his darkest moments and keeping him grounded long before he ever picked up a microphone.
Their official relationship began in 1976, which happened to be the very same year Bono and his friends started practicing in garages, forming the band that would become U2.
As the band took off, Ali focused on her own path, refusing to simply live in the shadow of a famous musician. After finishing high school, they married on August 21, 1982, at All Saints Church in Raheny, just as global fame arrived.
Ali wanted her own identity, so she enrolled at University College Dublin. She earned her degree in Social Science, Politics, and Sociology in 1989, balancing her studies while raising their first daughter, Jordan.
Instead of moving to Hollywood or London like most rock stars, they chose to stay in Ireland, raising their four children, Jordan, Eve, Elijah, and John, in a seaside home in South Dublin.
They kept their family out of the tabloids so their kids could grow up with normal Irish roots. Bono always credited her for keeping him grounded, once sharing that she told him, You've brought the audience home with you. Could you leave them outside in the garden?
Ali also became a dedicated activist, protesting the Sellafield nuclear plant and traveling to Chornobyl to help affected children. In 2005, she co-founded the clothing brand Edun to promote fair trade and ethical employment for factory workers across Africa.
Bono often admitted to reporters, Ali is the smarter one in our relationship, and she is the one who keeps my head from getting too big.
Her presence inspired U2's biggest hits, including Sweetest Thing, which Bono wrote as an apology for working in the studio on her birthday.
Today, they have been together for over fifty years and married for more than forty.
Ali once explained their secret, saying, Our marriage works because we genuinely like each other's company and we still have a lot to talk about.
Their beautiful journey shows that true success means nothing without someone beside you who knew your heart before the rest of the world knew your name.
