Before Lake Anna existed, the area was simply the North Anna River—best known as a major Civil War battle site. Everything changed in 1968 when Virginia Electric & Power Company purchased 18,000 acres across three counties to create what would become one of Virginia’s favorite lakes.

Construction of the North Anna Dam wrapped in 1972, and what was expected to take three years to fill took only 18 months thanks to rainfall from Hurricane Agnes. Today, Lake Anna helps power 450,000 homes and serves as one of the region’s top recreational destinations.

From farmland to a beloved lakeside escape—Lake Anna’s story is truly one of transformation.
