Religion continually hands humanity construction projects.
Build a righteous identity.
Build an impressive reputation.
Build a spiritual persona.
Build an image others will admire.
Build a version of yourself worthy of acceptance.
Improve Adam.
Polish Adam.
Educate Adam.
Discipline Adam.
Religious self-construction can become extraordinarily sophisticated while leaving the deepest question untouched:
WHAT IS ACTUALLY BEING FORMED WITHIN?
The apostle Paul announces something radically different from spiritual image management:
“My little children, for whom I am again suffering birth pangs until Christ is completely and permanently formed (molded) within you.”
— Galatians 4:19 AMPC
Paul does not say:
Until you successfully construct a religious personality.
He says:
UNTIL CHRIST BE FORMED IN YOU.
This is the fifth mission of Operation Grace to Glory.
We are entering:
THE FORMATION PROTOCOL.
OPENING INTELLIGENCE
The previous operation exposed The Image War.
We discovered that the battle for transformation includes the battle for attention.
The veil is removed.
The face turns.
Christ is beheld.
The Spirit transforms.
The image changes.
But now we must pe*****te deeper.
If beholding participates in transformation, what is God forming?
Paul gives the answer repeatedly:
CHRIST.
Christ living in me.
Christ in you.
Christ formed in you.
Christ dwelling in your hearts through faith.
Conformed to the image of His Son.
The apostolic Gospel therefore possesses an internal architecture.
It moves beyond external imitation toward:
INTERNAL PARTICIPATION.
The Christian life is not ultimately humanity performing an increasingly convincing impersonation of Jesus.
It is the life of Christ becoming increasingly manifest through people united to Him.
FIRST ILLUMINATION
RELIGION SPECIALIZES IN EXTERNAL CONSTRUCTION
Human beings understand construction.
We know how to manage appearances.
We learn which behaviors earn approval.
We learn religious vocabulary.
We learn how spiritual people are expected to sound.
We can construct:
a ministry identity,
a theological identity,
a moral identity,
a public identity,
a reputation for spirituality.
None of these outward things necessarily proves inward formation.
Jesus repeatedly confronted this problem.
The outside can appear impressive while the inside remains untouched.
This is why the New Covenant pe*****tes beneath:
APPEARANCE.
God is not merely decorating the exterior.
GOD IS WORKING IN THE INNER MAN.
ENEMY STRONGHOLD
RELIGIOUS SELF-CONSTRUCTION
Religious self-construction says:
Become what God wants through sufficient external effort.
Grace announces:
RECEIVE THE LIFE YOU COULD NEVER MANUFACTURE.
Religious self-construction begins with self as the raw material and self as the builder.
The Gospel begins with:
CHRIST.
This does not eliminate obedience, discipline, or intentional spiritual practice.
It radically changes their source.
We do not obey in order to manufacture Christ.
We obey because we belong to Christ and His Spirit is at work within us.
We do not produce the Vine by forcing fruit onto branches.
THE BRANCH ABIDES IN THE VINE,
AND THE LIFE OF THE VINE PRODUCES FRUIT.
This is formation by participation rather than identity by fabrication.
GALATIANS 2:20
THE END OF THE AUTONOMOUS PROJECT
Paul makes one of the most radical statements of Christian identity:
“I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me; and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”
— Galatians 2:20 AMPC
This verse demolishes the fantasy of autonomous Christianity.
Paul’s testimony is not:
I FINALLY BECAME STRONG ENOUGH.
It is:
CHRIST LIVES IN ME.
The center has changed.
The source has changed.
The governing life has changed.
The question is no longer merely:
What can Paul accomplish for Christ?
It becomes:
WHAT DOES THE LIFE OF CHRIST
LOOK LIKE THROUGH PAUL?
This is Formation Protocol intelligence.
THE GREAT IDENTITY SHIFT
The old religious question asks:
WHO CAN I MAKE MYSELF BECOME?
The New Covenant question asks:
WHO IS CHRIST IN ME?
Then:
WHAT HAPPENS AS HIS LIFE
TRANSFORMS MY WHOLE PERSON?
This distinction protects us from two opposite errors.
The first is self-manufactured spirituality.
The second is passivity.
Paul is not passive.
He labors.
He runs.
He disciplines himself.
He prays.
He teaches.
He suffers.
He serves.
But he identifies the source beneath the activity:
“I labored more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:10 AMPC
There is the protocol:
ACTIVITY WITHOUT AUTONOMY.
LABOR FROM GRACE.
FORMATION FROM LIFE.
INTELLIGENCE DISCOVERY 2
PAUL USES THE LANGUAGE OF BIRTH
Galatians 4:19 becomes even more powerful when we notice Paul’s metaphor.
He says:
I TRAVAIL IN BIRTH.
Then:
CHRIST BE FORMED IN YOU.
This is not construction-site language.
It is:
BIRTH LANGUAGE.
Religion says:
Build.
Paul says:
FORM.
Religion hands us bricks.
Paul speaks of pregnancy.
Religion constructs from the outside.
Divine life develops from within.
This distinction is enormous.
A living child is not assembled like a machine.
Life contains an internal formative principle.
Paul reaches for this organic imagery because Christian transformation cannot adequately be described as external religious assembly.
SOMETHING LIVING IS BEING FORMED.
THE GREEK FORMATION INTELLIGENCE
Paul’s language in Galatians 4:19 uses morphoō —to form, shape, or bring into form.
This belongs to a remarkable family of New Testament formation language.
Romans 8:29 speaks of believers being conformed to the image of God’s Son.
Philippians 3:21 speaks of Christ transforming the body of humiliation into conformity with His glorious body.
2 Corinthians 3:18 speaks of metamorphoō —transformation from glory to glory.
Together, these texts reveal that redemption concerns more than acquittal.
GOD’S PURPOSE INCLUDES FORM.
The image of Christ.
The character of Christ.
And ultimately, resurrection conformity to Christ.
Grace therefore possesses:
A FORMATIVE DESTINATION.
COLOSSIANS OPENS THE CLASSIFIED FILE
Paul calls something a mystery hidden from ages and generations.
Then he reveals it:
“To whom God was pleased to make known how great for the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ within and among you, the Hope of [realizing the] glory.”
— Colossians 1:27 AMPC
There it is.
The location of the hope:
WITHIN.
The Person who is the hope:
CHRIST.
The destination:
GLORY.
This gives us one of the governing equations of the entire Grace to Glory revelation:
**CHRIST IN YOU
THE HOPE OF GLORY.**
Glory is not finally secured through construction of an impressive religious self.
The hope of glory has already been located:
CHRIST WITHIN.
CLASSIFIED REVELATION
THE MYSTERY IS INWARD BEFORE IT BECOMES OUTWARD
This principle changes everything.
Fruit is visible.
But life is hidden.
Branches are visible.
But the sap is hidden.
Actions are visible.
But motives are hidden.
Character becomes visible.
But formation occurs deeply within.
The Kingdom repeatedly works:
INSIDE → OUTSIDE.
This does not make outward behavior irrelevant.
It explains where authentic transformation originates.
The Gospel does not teach us to ignore conduct.
It goes beneath conduct to:
SOURCE.
Jesus wants more than externally correct fruit attached artificially to a dead tree.
HE GIVES LIFE TO THE TREE.
EPHESIANS 3
HEAVEN TARGETS THE INNER MAN
Paul’s prayer provides extraordinary intelligence:
“May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the [Holy] Spirit [Himself indwelling your innermost being and personality].”
— Ephesians 3:16 AMPC
Where is the operation occurring?
THE INNER MAN.
By whom?
THE SPIRIT.
From what treasury?
HIS GLORY.
Then Paul continues:
“May Christ through your faith [actually] dwell (settle down, abide, make His permanent home) in your hearts!”
— Ephesians 3:17 AMPC
The imagery is stunning.
Not visitation.
HABITATION.
Not occasional religious inspiration.
CHRIST MAKING HIS HOME WITHIN.
The Formation Protocol is not behavior management.
It is:
INDWELLING.
THE INNER-MAN SUPPLY LINE
Now the previous briefings begin connecting.
Briefing 2 established:
SUPPLY.
Briefing 3 established:
INTERNAL FOUNTAIN.
Briefing 4 established:
BEHOLDING.
Briefing 5 now reveals:
FORMATION.
Watch the progression:
GRACE SUPPLIES
↓
THE SPIRIT INDWELLS
↓
CHRIST IS BEHELD
↓
THE INNER MAN IS STRENGTHENED
↓
CHRIST IS FORMED
↓
LOVE TAKES ROOT
↓
CHARACTER CHANGES
↓
CHRIST BECOMES VISIBLE.
The missions are converging.
LOVE: THE EVIDENCE OF FORMATION
Paul’s Ephesians 3 prayer does not stop with power.
He immediately moves into:
LOVE.
“May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love…”
— Ephesians 3:17 AMPC
This is critical.
Spiritual formation cannot be measured merely by:
knowledge,
charisma,
vocabulary,
visibility,
influence,
or manifestations of power.
Paul drives formation into:
LOVE.
Why?
Because Christ’s character is not merely powerful.
GOD IS LOVE.
The Formation Protocol therefore asks a dangerous diagnostic question:
IS CHRIST’S LOVE BECOMING VISIBLE IN US?
If our theology becomes greater while love becomes smaller, something has malfunctioned.
If revelation produces superiority rather than love, formation has been confused with information.
THE COUNTERFEIT NEW MAN
Religious identity construction can produce a counterfeit.
It can manufacture someone who:
sounds transformed,
looks transformed,
knows transformed vocabulary,
understands transformed theology—
while inwardly remaining governed by:
fear,
competition,
pride,
envy,
accusation,
self-exaltation.
This counterfeit is especially dangerous because it possesses:
THE APPEARANCE OF FORMATION
WITHOUT ITS INNER REALITY.
The Formation Protocol therefore refuses cosmetic Christianity.
We are not painting fruit onto branches.
WE ARE RECEIVING LIFE FROM THE VINE.
THE ADAM RENOVATION PROJECT
Here we encounter another major enemy strategy:
IMPROVE ADAM.
Make Adam more religious.
Make Adam more disciplined.
Make Adam more impressive.
Make Adam more spiritual.
Make Adam capable of boasting:
Look what I became.
But Paul’s Gospel repeatedly brings the old autonomous boast to the Cross.
Galatians 2:20:
CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST.
Then:
CHRIST LIVES IN ME.
The New Covenant is not finally:
ADAM 2.0.
Its destination is conformity to:
CHRIST.
The Last Adam.
The heavenly Man.
The image of the Son.
NEFESH AND RUACH
This also illuminates the emerging RLM framework concerning Nefesh and Ruach.
Genesis describes the first Adam as a living nefesh.
Paul identifies the Last Adam as a life-giving Spirit.
The point is not that the Nefesh was inherently evil—Adam was a living soul before the Fall.
The crisis is the fallen human person attempting to live from autonomous self-source rather than divine supply.
Formation therefore does not mean annihilating the soul.
THE NEFESH IS RENEWED.
The mind is renewed.
Desire is reordered.
Emotion is healed and sanctified.
The will learns obedience.
The whole person comes increasingly under the government and supply of the Spirit.
The goal is not:
NO SOUL.
It is:
A SPIRIT-GOVERNED,
CHRIST-FORMED HUMAN PERSON.
THE WORD DIVIDES SOURCE
Hebrews 4:12 gives us a powerful companion revelation:
“For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.”
— Hebrews 4:12 AMPC
Within this Formation Protocol, that becomes an extraordinary diagnostic image.
The Word exposes:
Where is this coming from?
Self-construction?
Or Christ-source?
Performance?
Or communion?
Fear?
Or faith?
Self-exaltation?
Or love?
The issue is deeper than whether an action looks religious.
WHAT IS ITS SOURCE?
The living Word pe*****tes beneath appearances and judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Formation begins where source is exposed.
THE DEATH OF THE MINISTRY PERSONA
This mission must pe*****te ministry itself.
It is possible to construct:
A MINISTRY PERSONA.
A public version of ourselves designed to appear:
stronger,
more spiritual,
more certain,
more impressive,
more revelatory,
more successful
than our actual inward formation.
But Christ does not need an actor.
CHRIST WANTS A VESSEL.
The objective is not to perform spirituality convincingly.
It is to become so rooted in Christ that what appears outwardly increasingly corresponds to what God is forming inwardly.
No mask.
No religious costume.
No spiritual theater.
CHRIST WITHIN.
CHRIST WITHOUT.
THE SOD HA-SOD MYSTERY
THE HIDDEN CHRIST BECOMES THE VISIBLE LIFE
Here we reach the secret within the secret.
Colossians says:
CHRIST IN YOU.
Galatians says:
CHRIST FORMED IN YOU.
Ephesians says:
CHRIST DWELLING IN YOUR HEARTS.
Romans says:
CONFORMED TO THE IMAGE OF HIS SON.
2 Corinthians says:
TRANSFORMED INTO THE SAME IMAGE.
Put the apostolic intelligence together:
THE INVISIBLE INDWELLING
IS MOVING TOWARD
VISIBLE MANIFESTATION.
The hidden Christ becomes visible through:
character,
love,
wisdom,
holiness,
mercy,
faithfulness,
peace,
power,
service,
and ultimately resurrection glory.
This is:
CHRIST MANIFESTED THROUGH A PEOPLE.
STOP TRYING TO BECOME YOUR OWN SAVIOR
Religious self-construction secretly assigns humanity an impossible role.
You must create the righteous person.
You must sustain the righteous person.
You must perfect the righteous person.
You must protect the righteous person’s reputation.
This produces tremendous exhaustion.
Grace announces:
SOMEONE ELSE IS YOUR LIFE.
Christ does not merely assist your self-salvation project.
CHRIST IS YOUR LIFE.
“When Christ, Who is our life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in [the splendor of His] glory.”
— Colossians 3:4 AMPC
Not merely:
Christ who improves our life.
CHRIST WHO IS OUR LIFE.
That changes the entire architecture.
FORMATION IS NOT PASSIVITY
Again, this revelation must never become an excuse for spiritual passivity.
Paul says:
“Him we preach and proclaim, warning and admonishing everyone and instructing everyone in all wisdom (comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God), that we may present every person mature (full-grown, fully initiated, complete, and perfect) in Christ (the Anointed One).”
— Colossians 1:28 AMPC
Then Paul says he labors toward this goal.
But how?
“For this I labor [unto weariness], striving with all the superhuman energy which He so mightily enkindles and works within me.”
— Colossians 1:29 AMPC
There it is again:
PAUL LABORS.
But:
GOD WORKS WITHIN.
This destroys the false choice between grace and effort.
Apostolic effort is:
GRACE-ENERGIZED PARTICIPATION.
Not self-sufficient construction.
THE FORMATION LABORATORY
Everyday life becomes the laboratory.
Relationships reveal formation.
Pressure reveals formation.
Opposition reveals formation.
Success reveals formation.
Failure reveals formation.
Waiting reveals formation.
Correction reveals formation.
Power reveals formation.
The question is not merely:
Did I pass the test?
The deeper question is:
WHAT IS BEING FORMED IN ME
THROUGH COMMUNION WITH CHRIST?
Can pressure expose where self-construction remains?
Can weakness redirect us toward grace?
Can conflict reveal whether love is rooted deeply?
Can success reveal whether identity is grounded in Christ rather than applause?
Formation occurs in actual life.
IDENTITY RECEIVED BEFORE IDENTITY EXPRESSED
Religion says:
PERFORM → BECOME ACCEPTABLE.
Grace says:
RECEIVE → ABIDE → BE TRANSFORMED → EXPRESS.
This sequence is essential.
We do not manufacture identity to persuade God to accept us.
In Christ, grace gives before religious self-construction can boast.
Then the life received begins producing transformation.
The fruit becomes evidence of life—
not payment for life.
ROOT BEFORE FRUIT.
LIFE BEFORE MANIFESTATION.
CHRIST WITHIN BEFORE CHRIST EXPRESSED.
THE FORMATION OF LOVE
Return again to Ephesians 3.
Paul prays that believers comprehend the breadth, length, depth, and height, and know the love of Christ.
Then he reaches an astonishing climax:
“[That you may really come] to know [practically, through experience for yourselves] the love of Christ, which far surpasses mere knowledge [without experience]; that you may be filled [through all your being] unto all the fullness of God [may have the richest measure of the divine Presence, and become a body wholly filled and flooded with God Himself]!”
— Ephesians 3:19 AMPC
The progression is breathtaking:
INNER MAN STRENGTHENED
↓
CHRIST DWELLS WITHIN
↓
ROOTED IN LOVE
↓
KNOW THE LOVE OF CHRIST
↓
FILLED UNTO GOD’S FULLNESS.
This is not religious cosmetics.
THIS IS INTERNAL FORMATION.
THE FORMATION PROTOCOL AND GLORY
Why does this belong in Grace to Glory?
Because glory is not merely external radiance.
The New Testament repeatedly connects glory with:
CHRIST’S IMAGE.
Romans 8:29 says conformity to the Son.
2 Corinthians 3:18 says transformation into the same image.
Colossians 1:27 says Christ within is the hope of glory.
Therefore:
GLORIFICATION HAS A CHRIST-SHAPED DESTINATION.
God is not producing generic spiritual beings.
He is conforming His children to:
THE SON.
Christ is:
the Source,
the Pattern,
the Indwelling Life,
the Image,
and the Hope of Glory.
FIELD INTELLIGENCE
The Formation Protocol requires courageous questions:
Am I trying to appear spiritual—or allowing Christ to form me inwardly?
Do I need people to believe something about me that is not yet true within me?
Is my identity dependent upon ministry, title, gifting, recognition, or reputation?
Am I attempting to produce through pressure what the Spirit produces through communion?
Is greater revelation producing greater love?
When weakness is exposed, do I hide—or return to grace?
Is Christ merely my example—or increasingly my experienced life?
And the decisive question:
WHAT IS BEING FORMED WITHIN ME?
OPERATIONAL WARNING
DO NOT CONFUSE CHRIST-FORMATION WITH ERASURE OF PERSONHOOD
Christ formed within does not mean God destroys human individuality.
Paul remains Paul.
Peter remains Peter.
John remains John.
Their personalities are not photocopied into one identical human temperament.
Christlikeness is not personality annihilation.
It is the restoration of human life under the government of divine Life.
Grace does not erase creation.
GRACE REDEEMS IT.
Therefore the destination is not less human.
In Christ, humanity moves toward:
TRUE HUMANITY
CONFORMED TO THE SON.
THE GREAT FORMATION REVERSAL
The serpent says:
BECOME THROUGH INDEPENDENCE.
Religion says:
BECOME THROUGH PERFORMANCE.
The world says:
BECOME THROUGH SELF-INVENTION.
Grace says:
RECEIVE CHRIST.
The Spirit says:
BE TRANSFORMED.
Paul says:
CHRIST BE FORMED IN YOU.
This is the reversal.
Humanity ceases attempting to generate its own glory.
The believer receives divine life and becomes a participant in God’s transforming work.
OPERATIONAL SEQUENCE
CHRIST INDWELLS
↓
INNER MAN STRENGTHENED

CHRIST MAKES HIS HOME IN THE HEART
↓
LOVE TAKES ROOT
↓
CHRIST IS FORMED
↓
MIND AND CHARACTER ARE TRANSFORMED

CHRIST IS MANIFESTED.
MISSION OBJECTIVE
Before entering Chapter V, establish these coordinates:
The Gospel is not a religious self-construction project.
Paul places Christ’s indwelling life at the center of Christian identity.
Galatians describes Christ being formed within believers.
Ephesians locates the Spirit’s strengthening work in the inner man.
Christ dwells in the heart through faith.
Love is a primary evidence of genuine formation.
Apostolic labor is active, but its energy comes from God working within.
The Nefesh is not annihilated; the human person is renewed under the government of the Spirit.
The living Word exposes the source beneath religious appearances.
The destination is conformity to the image of God’s Son.
And above everything:
CHRIST IN YOU
IS THE HOPE OF GLORY.
FINAL INTELLIGENCE
The religious construction site is closing.
Put down the bricks.
Put down the mask.
Put down the persona.
Put down the exhausting project of manufacturing a spiritual self capable of impressing God and humanity.
There is another mystery.
Older than our performance.
Deeper than our reputation.
Greater than our religious identity.
Paul calls it:
THE MYSTERY HIDDEN FROM AGES.
And then Heaven opens the classified file:
CHRIST IN YOU.
The hope is not:
Adam finally becoming impressive.
The hope is:
CHRIST.
The mission is not:
Construct a superior religious self.
The mission is:
CHRIST FORMED WITHIN.
The method is not:
Independent human power.
The Agent is:
THE HOLY SPIRIT.
The environment is:
GRACE.
The evidence is:
LOVE.
The destination is:
GLORY.
And the manifestation is:
CHRIST THROUGH HIS PEOPLE.

Mission Accomplished:
Religious self-construction has been exposed.
The ministry persona has been unmasked.
The Adam-improvement project has been terminated.
The battlefield has moved from outward appearance into the inner man.
The Spirit strengthens.
Christ indwells.
Love takes root.
Character transforms.
The image emerges.
And the mystery hidden from ages stands revealed:
CHRIST IN YOU,
THE HOPE OF GLORY.
We are now prepared to enter Chapter V:
CHRIST IN YOU, THE HOPE OF GLORY.
MORE GRACE.
MORE CHRIST.
MORE GLORY.
STOP BUILDING THE PERSON
GRACE CAME TO REVEAL.
THE NEW MAN IS NOT ADAM IMPROVED.
THE MISSION IS CHRIST FORMED WITHIN.
