Who else has ZERO shame dancing to Prince in the middle of a store?

Forty-three years ago this week, David “David Z” Rivkin was in the mobile recording truck outside First Avenue, recording the legendary performance that became the heart of Purple Rain.

Today, we say goodbye to him.

David Z was there from the very beginning, engineering the early demos that helped Prince land his first record deal.

He later helped record Prince and the Revolution’s iconic August 3, 1983 performance at First Avenue, where the live recordings of “Purple Rain,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and “Baby I’m a Star” were captured.

A Grammy-winning producer and engineer, David also worked with artists including Lipps Inc., The Jets, Jonny Lang, and Etta James.

His influence helped shape the Minneapolis Sound and will be felt for generations.

Rest in peace, David Z. Our thoughts are with Bobby Z ( Bobby 'Z' Rivkin ), the Rivkin family, and everyone whose lives he touched. Thank you for the music. 💜

After a visit to Paisley Park the day before her Minneapolis concert, Olivia Dean covered Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover.” Her band also teased “Controversy” during their introductions.

Earlier in the show, she shared that she loves Minneapolis for creating two geniuses: Prince, of course… and Snoopy.

Happy Birthday to Andre Cymone.

We were so happy to have him at our party in LA earlier this year.

Without Andre, Prince’s story would have looked very different and the Minneapolis Sound may never have taken shape.

It’s simple:
No Andre. No Prince.

One day, we’d love to see Andre perform “The Dance Electric” at one of our Dance Electric parties.

How cool would that be?

Clive Davis helped shape the careers of countless artists, including a brief but memorable partnership with Prince during the Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic era.

After Prince's passing, Clive called him "a once-in-a-lifetime artist whose genius transcended every musical boundary."

Rest in peace, Clive Davis.
