AAJA Day 2 ❤️

Another day full of growing my brain! Today I attended a full day of meaningful discussions:

1) How journalists covered the ICE operations in Minnesota while verifying information, handling misinformation, and making quick decisions during breaking news.

2) How strong community partnerships are built through trust, listening, and working together with the people you serve.

3) Learned about new research on Asian Americans that challenges stereotypes and highlights the diversity and different experiences within our communities.

4) Talked about the growth of AAPI representation in pop culture and how journalists can cover it with more context and cultural understanding.

5) Discussed how to report on aging, caregiving, and end-of-life topics with empathy while understanding the cultural values and beliefs within AAPI communities.

Day 1 at AAJA. ❤️

Got to spend the day connecting with Asian American journalists from all over the country! Huge shout out to my friend Bo Thao-Urabe for sponsoring me so I can be here to learn and grow.

Mayor Kaohly Her delivered an emotional speech about the importance of Asian journalists and media especially during the hardest of times like Metro Surge.

ThaoMee Xiong of CAAL and I also had the absolute honor of being able to meet and spend time with Nicole Dungca, Alissa Zhu, Sona Patel, and Kimi Yoshino who had an incredibly meaningful discussion on their Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into Baltimore's opioid crisis, which exposed how older Black men were being disproportionately impacted and how data and storytelling together can drive accountability. This talk was brought to us by ABC and ESPN.

My favorite part of the day was getting to spend time with some of the loveliest community leaders and friends, ThaoMee Xiong, Katie Ka Vang, and Xay Yang.

Grateful to be here and excited for what's ahead the next few days! 🙏🏽

I am so excited to announce our Emcee for Reclaim Our Plate event!

When I envisioned who I wanted to facilitate this day to create a welcoming/fun and safe space for Asian women across the Twin Cities to have heart felt health conversations, eat good food and walk us through the fun activities to connect us to our bodies, I had to bring on the one and only Sheng Elizabeth Lor. 👏🏼

She is a Hmong woman, media producer, community storyteller, and advocate whose work centers culture, healing, access, and representation.

Sheng is the founder of HAVEN, a women’s wellness initiative focused on healing, personal growth, and creating intentional spaces for connection and community. With a background as a social worker in mental health, Sheng brings a deep understanding of emotional wellbeing and care into all that she does. Through her work in cultural media and public service, she is passionate about helping people feel seen, supported, and informed. She believes in the power of telling our own stories, caring for larger community, and building pathways for wellness, belonging, and collective healing.

What helps Sheng stay consistent in her health/fitness journey:

“What helps me stay consistent is remembering that taking care of myself is not about perfection. It is about coming home to myself. My health and wellness journey is rooted in wanting to feel strong, grounded, confident, and present in my mind, body, and soul. As someone who pours deeply into community, work, and others, I have learned that caring for myself has to be part of the work too. My why is to build a life where I feel healthy, whole, and aligned, so I can continue to show up fully for myself and the people I serve.”

The symbol behind Sheng Elizabeth Lor & Co carries a story that comes from my parents.

My father’s name, Tswv Choj, means bridge. Bridges connect what would otherwise remain separate. They allow people to cross into new places, opportunities, and understanding. Sometimes they become the very reason people can go where they are meant to go.

My mother’s name, Npaum, comes from a small-winged insect. It symbolizes movement, resilience, and transformation. The ability to rise from where you begin and bring life, change, and possibility wherever you go.

The logo brings these two ideas together. They are me, and I am them.

A bridge that connects and builds.
Wings that allow people to rise and transform.

This is the work I’ve spent my life doing. Bridging communities, institutions, media, and systems so that people, stories, and ideas can move forward and take flight.

My work may be new in form. But its roots have always been here.
