🛒 www.taranstrong.com Welcome to "Taran Strong". It's a goal.

As the page grows beyond what we could have ever imagined, there are many questions about Tar's injury, diagnosis, background, who runs the page etc. The purpose of "Taran Strong" is to document her journey and recovery, and to bring hope and inspiration to others facing their own struggles. There are legal restrictions in place prohibiting ongoing discussion regarding her family situation and we ask that everyone respect that. "Welcome to Taran Strong (formerly Tar's Road to Recovery). What started as a way to record her progress, has turned into a beautiful, loving community of support - individuals caring for each other. The page is run collaboratively with close friends of Tar, who are page admins. She provides the video and photographic content, and some of the quotes and inspirational messages. While many posts are made and responded to by her team, she "IS" the page. Without her as the backbone of this loving community, it would not exist. The background of what happened to Taran, and set her on this journey, is explained below. In September 2020, Taran was preparing for an upcoming move to South Carolina with her family. She and three of her four children were involved in horrific car accident, the impact of which was astronomical. The accident tragically took the life of her 3 year old daughter, and the driver of the other vehicle, who was also a beautiful mother. Tar deals with the complex emotions relating to the accident privately, in therapy. We don't speak often of the other driver, not because we don't care, but because her story, and her family's story is not Taran's to tell. We all think about and pray for her family, often. Two of Tar's other children were also injured in the accident. Thankfully, they have recovered from their physical injuries. Tar survived - barely. She was paralyzed from the neck down and hanging onto life, with a frontal lobe traumatic brain injury, too. She "died" multiple times and each time, the medical team brought her back. She has to believe that God had a purpose for keeping her on this earth and that thought is one that has helped her grow spiritually, too. Micki Valentine's loss on that awful day, is one that sometimes seems impossible to recover from. She would have turned 8 in February of 2025. Though she is missed intensely each and every day, we can only imagine the joys she brings to others in Heaven. Her heart full of love and zest for life was infectious. Micki's memory motivates Tar very day to get better, be better and do better – words we should all live by. Her ultimate diagnosis was incomplete C2-C5 tetraplegia (quadriplegic), with a frontal lobe traumatic brain injury, along with other injuries (open fractures, perforated bowel). She was not expected to walk again, let alone function in the way she is today. While her daily challenges often feel like climbing a mountain, she pushes through, with the ultimate goal being independent function and living. Taran lives alone with her pup, and with the help of part time caregivers, in an apartment in Orange County, California. Her focus is on healing, both physically and mentally from the trauma of the last few years. She takes inspiration every day from people around the world who have reached out to her with love, kindness, and HOPE. There aren’t enough words to convey how wonderful her medical team are. Her nurse, Kim, her CNA, Dani, her neuro trainers (PT), Josh and Jason, her OT, Margie, her trauma therapist Dr. O, neurologist, psychiatrist - all wonderful people who have literally transformed her life. SO many friends surround her with love and care and she is eternally grateful to you all. This page exists for one reason, and one reason alone. To thank everyone, and to give back. Together, we are working on launching a foundation in 2025, helping families who have suffered similar traumas. She is SUCH a bright light, and wants to shine that light on others and help them find their way, too. It has inspired her to hear how her journey is encouraging others not to give up, or to give them strength while battling their own health issues. As Tar herself has stated – she is grateful to be alive to see this next chapter be written and for you to be a part. Live, laugh, drink water and (her beloved Micki's nickname). Favorite Quotes

Some people come into your life for a season… and some become family. 🤍

Tar was so happy to see her “Brookie Cookie” again on a stroll to the beach. Brooke was one of Tar’s caregivers for several years, walking alongside her through so many moments of recovery, growth, and rebuilding life after her accident.

Recently, Brooke retired from caregiving to spend more time with her grandchildren after they moved back to California. But even when life changes, the special connections remain.

A beautiful beach day, an unexpected reunion, and a reminder that the people who support us during our hardest seasons often leave footprints that last forever. 🌊🤍

A little something different from Tar today. ❤️

There’s always so much she wants to say, and sometimes when the camera starts rolling, she feels like she ends up saying the same things over and over.

So this time, she made herself some notes on her iPad, organized her thoughts… and even recruited ChatGPT to help with some very cheesy 80s rhymes. 😂 She’ll tell you that part herself - the rest is her own!

We have so many new faces here who ask about Tar’s story and what happened to her, so she shares a little of that too.

A little 80s nostalgia, a little backstory, and a little glimpse into where Tar is today.

Today is National Concussion Awareness Day. 🧠

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury. And that’s part of why this day matters: a head injury doesn’t have to look dramatic to be real.

Tar lives with a frontal lobe TBI, along with a spinal cord injury. Her brain injury is of course more severe and complex than a concussion, but she knows firsthand that brain injuries aren’t always something you can see from the outside.

Someone can look “fine” and still be struggling.

So today, we’re adding our voice to the conversation.

Take head injuries seriously. Get checked. And believe people when they tell you they don’t feel like themselves.

Brain injuries can be mild or severe, temporary or lasting. Every person’s experience is different, and every one deserves to be taken seriously.

If this is part of your story too, whether concussion, TBI, caregiver, coach or parent, we see you. ❤️

Sometimes the people you run into at just the right moment feel like a little gift. 💜

Last weekend, while Tar was in Laguna Beach to scatter the rose petals, she heard someone calling her name.

It was Bobby, an old friend she’s known for more than 20 years and hadn’t seen in a very long time. He knew Tar long before the accident, knew her as a mom, and was one of the first people to hold her older children when they were babies.

It was an unexpected reunion on an emotional weekend, and some of the things Bobby reminded her of were things she really needed to hear.

He also invited Tar to come by the gym, so Sarah and Tar may just take him up on that one of these days at Bobby's Boxing and Fitness. 🥊❤️

And before we go, a very special thank you to sweet Janet for the beautiful sunflowers and pumpkin she sent Tar for Micki’s anniversary. Such a thoughtful gesture on a very difficult week. 🌻🎃💜

Sometimes a little kindness finds you exactly when you need it.

Monday musings… very late on a Monday night. 💜

Tar was reading Mel Robbins tonight and came across something that really spoke to her.

It was about how loved ones or close friends are such a huge part of your everyday life, and your brain is used to them being there. They’re woven into your routines, your thoughts, your stories. Something happens and you instinctively think, “I need to tell them this.”

And when they’re no longer part of your everyday life in the same way, that instinct doesn’t just disappear.

That one hit pretty close to home tonight.

It also got Tar thinking about her circle and how much it has changed over the years. One of the things she’s been working through in therapy is learning to look at relationships differently - not just holding onto someone because she loves them, misses them, or wants them in her life, but asking whether that relationship is actually healthy and whether that person truly has her best interests at heart.

That hasn’t always been easy for her. There have been times when wanting so badly to feel cared for made it harder to see when someone maybe wasn’t showing up for her in the way she needed.

She’s learning. Her circle is smaller these days, but there’s a lot of love in it. 💜

Nothing particularly polished tonight. Just Tar, a book, and some very late Monday night musings.

Living with a spinal cord injury isn’t one story, one level of ability, or one version of “progress.”

For Tar, some of the biggest victories over the years have been things most people would never think twice about. A transfer. Standing a little longer. Doing her own hair. Regaining a little more independence.

Those things may look small from the outside. They aren’t.

This month, we’ll continue sharing a little more about life with SCI, the challenges people don’t always see, and why accessibility, understanding and inclusion matter.

Because independence looks different for everyone. And different doesn’t mean less. 💚

Tar had planned to do this Thursday night, but when the time came, she just wasn’t ready. So they waited til last night. 🤍

She obviously couldn’t make it down the stairs to the water, so Sarah took Micki’s white rose petals down for her and she watched from the top of the stairs.

Thank you, sweet Sarah. 💜

25 years later, may we remember the lives lost. The families forever changed. The first responders and countless others who showed extraordinary courage.

And we remember how, in the days that followed, people came together. Strangers helped strangers. Communities supported one another. People around the world stood together in grief, compassion and hope.

May we never forget that either. 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙
