Happy Malamute Monday! Sully’s extensive bloodwork came back from our holistic vet, and we finally got some answers 🤎
The two main concerns were very low thyroid levels and elevated GI fungal bacteria markers, so we also submitted a f***l exam + Giardia test to investigate the GI side further.
Everything else came back looking good, which we’re incredibly thankful for 🥹
After running a more comprehensive thyroid panel, she confirmed that Sully has hypothyroidism and will need thyroid medication/supplementation moving forward. Low thyroid function in dogs can affect much more than energy levels… it can contribute to skin issues, hair loss, muscle loss, weight changes, inflammation, and mobility challenges as well.
He also started hormone therapy last Friday (testosterone injections) to help support muscle maintenance, arthritis management, mobility, and skin health.
One thing I’ve been learning through my own health journey and my dogs too, is how connected everything in the body really is. Changes in hormones, gut health, inflammation, and mobility can all impact one another, especially in senior dogs (and us humans too).
Moving forward, I’m also starting to learn more about canine strengthening and mobility work so we can focus on improving his balance, strength, confidence, and overall quality of life ✨
Very thankful we caught these things now and hopeful we can help him feel more comfortable and supported moving forward 🤎
