#19 Tom Tupa’s Ohio State Career: A Dual-Threat Standout
1. Four-Year Letterman & Two-Way Star (1984–1987)
• Tupa lettered all four years, excelling as both punter and backup quarterback before stepping into the starting QB role his senior year.  
• He currently ranks among the best in OSU history in several punting records: highest single-season average (47.1 in 1984), highest career average (44.7), and second-most total punting yards (9,564).  
2. Senior Quarterback Season (1987)
• As a senior under coach Earle Bruce, Tupa became the full-time starting quarterback, leading Ohio State to a 6–4–1 record.  
• He threw for 2,252 yards, with 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, ranking him 23rd all-time in OSU passing yards.   
• He notched a signature win: defeating Michigan 23–20 in Bruce’s final game.  
3. Accolades & Honors
• He was a consensus All-American punter in 1987 and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors multiple years (1984, 1985, 1987).  
4. College Legacy & Hall of Fame
• Tupa’s versatility and records cemented his legacy; in 2022, he was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame.
