They didn’t suddenly become racist when they joined the force. This is the result of a lifetime of immersion in a violent culture of white supremacy. It has been cultivated in homes, at schools, and in every institution with no challenging or interrupting of its acceptance as the norm. So when people ask why we need to be talking to young people about race, power, and every other intersection of identity, this is why. #teachingispolitical

A CALL TO CREATE & CARE | DAY TWO: FOUR CORNERS PUBLIC ARTS

Join us this weekend, April 24th and 25th (and in the support of International Earth Day 🌎), as we show support for our communities and creating public art here in Newark.

☀️Starting on Saturday, April 24th the City of Newark City of Newark, NJ - City Hall, the ACM Graphic Design Program, New Arts Justice at Rutgers University—Newark, and various partners will join together in an action to repaint and preserve our social justice community ground murals #MuralsforJustice. These were first painted in July of 2020 on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard proclaiming “ABOLISH WHITE SUPREMACY” and “ALL BLACK LIVES MATTER” on Halsey St.

🗣This call to repaint is a way to come together and reinforce that this City is dedicated to racial justice and the protection of our communities. Through this action, we celebrate the activism of our local arts community and seek to use public art to create new stories of a vibrant and liberated city.

☀️On Sunday, April 25th @fourcornerspublicarts will spend the day creating and caring for their sites of focus (Treat Place, Beaver St, and surrounding areas). Join FCPA artists alumni and supporters to touch up murals, and collaborate on a community artwork.

✨Both events are open to the public with limited spacing. We welcome Newarkers of all ages. To join us on either day, sign up via linktree in bio or at calltocreateandcare.eventbrite.com We ask that attendees wear face masks and socially distance in an effort to keep our community safe.

We’re excited to announce our story Sheila & Joe, is being featured on NPR ! Directed by Julie Winokur, Sheila & Joe is a love story that unfolds behind bars. This story is told through hundreds of letters shared by Sheila Rule, a former correspondent for The New York Times, and Joe Robinson, a man serving 20 years in prison. Despite a 20 year age difference, and undeterred by the physical barriers of prison, their love has unstoppable momentum.
