đ¨ Race Reporting in Veterinary Schools is Now Optional đ¨
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education has quietly removed the requirement for veterinary schools to report student race despite feedback from veterinary professionals, including veterinarians from high levels in academia, who submitted formal comments to the COE during the public feedback period.
Their concerns went unanswered. This matters because the profession remains overwhelmingly white compared to the U.S. population:
Veterinarians (2021):
91.9% White
2.5% Asian
1.4% Hispanic
0.9% Black
0.4% Indigenous
U.S. Population (2024):
60% White
20% Hispanic
14.4% Black
1% Indigenous
Without mandatory reporting, disparities may go unnoticed and unaddressed.
đŁ Take Action: Tell your AVMA state reps, House of Delegates, and your vet school that reporting diversity is critical. We canât fix what we donât measure.
