South Fallsburg, NY 12779 June 4, 2020: Supervisor Steven Vegliante announced today a Press Conference by Zoom Conference will be held on June 5, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. to discuss the recent signing by the Supervisor of a pledge to My Brother’s Keeper and the community ensuring common sense limits on the Police Department’s Use of Force Policies.

Each will make a statement and take questions from the media, explaining how they will honor the pledge and ensure safe, and respectful interactions between the Police Department and the Community.

In discussing the pledge, Supervisor Vegliante noted, “I have been hesitant to address the issues affecting our Country out of fear or saying the wrong thing, or doing the wrong thing. I realize that being uncomfortable is never an excuse. What happened in Minnesota was a horrific example of a nationwide issue…one that deserves discussion and one that demands action. Here in Fallsburg, we will proudly honor our pledge and treat all with respect and fairness and at the same time demand justice for those who have suffered from these awful actions.”

Fallsburg Police Chief Simmie Williams III added, “I am proud to lead this department. The actions in Minnesota have no place in policing. Our department, each man and woman in it, have and will respect the rights of all individuals, and they serve with honor and distinction. It is my hope that this pledge and the work that comes from it, will further all of our goal to support our community and bring healing and progress to this uncertain time.”

A DARK ANNIVERSARY AND A ONE-YEAR WAIT FOR ANSWERS

WILL A PROMINENT RETIRED TOWN JUSTICE EVER BE CHARGED WITH A CRIME IN VEHICULAR DEATHS OF TWO TEENAGERS?

Over the past year, I've had the honor of speaking with the families of Justin Finkel and Devin Zeininger, the two teenagers struck and killed one year ago today by a car driven by Isaac Kantrowiz.

How ironic that as protests are raging around our nation about injustices that it falls on this anniversary of such a massive tragedy that touched so many nerves in Sullivan County.

You see, there has been no justice for the families of these two teenagers, when everyone knows that Kantrowitz had three other accidents prior to June 2, 2019 and two of them involved pedestrians. One woman Kantrowitz hit, also on Glen Wild Road, was nearly paralyzed.

Former District Attorney Jim Farrell covered up for Alan Berman in 2014 when 6-year-old Rivka Weinman was struck and killed in Fallsburg - and he covered up for Isaac Kantrowitz in 2019. We did deep reporting on both these incidents and there's just no logical explanation to explain why Farrell went silent on both these matters and declined to prosecute. Except that both Berman (through his father) and Kantrowitz are two people of significant influence in Sullivan County.

In the 2014 case, he strangely swept in and told Fallsburg Police Chief Simmie Williams that HE was taking charge of that investigation. Those were Williams' words to The SullivanTimes. Yet, Farrell never revealed the outcome of his "investigation" into Berman's incident.

Neither Berman nor Kantrowitz were issued a traffic ticket. (Berman is the 30-something son of former Empire Resorts CEO Robert Berman). Farrell put many other people in jail with the harshest of sentences over the years so going soft on Berman and Kantrowitz never fit his image - the same tough image he campaigned on to become a County Court Judge.

So now it's up to Acting District Attorney Meagan Galligan to show Sullivan County that she truly is a prosecutor who is independent from her predecessor.

Galligan was adamant about prosecuting the driver who struck and killed a woman on Route 52 in Youngsville earlier this year. The SullivanTimes was in Town of Callicoon Court that night watching Galligan make her case.

The driver in the Youngsville incident was not a former town and village justice, nor did she have former DA Steve Lungen representing her like Kantrowitz.
Of course, it should not matter if everyone is REALLY treated equally under the law.

The Department of Motor vehicles initial report showed that speed was a factor in the incident on June 2, 2019. Galligan has had the Accident Reconstruction Report from the State Police for a few months now that goes into more detail about what happened on that Sunday afternoon.

The courts in Sullivan County began to gradually reopen on May 28. So we'll be watching closely to learn about the possibility of a grand jury indictment on some charge that holds Kantrowitz accountable for the deaths of two boys who had their whole lives ahead of them.

Acting District Attorney Meagan Galligan smiling and congratulating her former boss when he was sworn in as County Court Judge earlier this year.
