Two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies were shot in their heads in an apparent ambush attack Saturday night while they sat in their patrol cars outside a metro rail station in Compton.

"One male deputy and one female deputy were ambushed as they sat in their patrol vehicle," a sheriff's department tweet read. "Both sustained multiple gunshot wounds and are in critical condition. They are both currently undergoing surgery. The suspect is still at large."

The two who were attacked are a 31-year-old mother of a young boy, and a 24-year-old male deputy. Video of the shooting shows the suspect walk up to the passenger window, and shoot multiple times into it before running off. The publicly released surveillance video stops at that point, but reporters who’ve seen the full version say the female officer stumbles out of the vehicle after being shot in the head.

After being transported to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, the critically wounded deputies were in surgery when a small group of protesters showed up and began taunting hospital security and police, saying, among other things, “I hope they die” and “You’re gonna be next” and “You’re all gonna die one by one.” Video of the protest was filmed on cell phones by the participants.

The shooting suspect is described as a dark-skinned male. He appears to be either a juvenile or a short adult, though a sheriff’s department spokesperson warned that the incident was filmed on a fisheye security lease, which may distort the image dimensions.
