Bench update 6-2-26

The Accurate Miniatures 1/72 F-4J Phantom II is turning out really well. First Phantom I've built and I'm learning a lot with this one, so I'm very happy with it.

You know I can't go long without a Tomcat on the bench, so the Hobby Craft 1/72 F-14A enters the fray. I knew as soon as I opened the box that I would use other decals. The included decals look like something a 4 year old drew. Actually I'm fairly sure most 4 year olds could do better. I took cockpit decals from the old 1993 Hasegawa Bicentennial F-14 kit I built a long time ago and made it look presentable. For main markings I will use one of the unused liveries from the Tamiya F-14 kit.

The Mighty Eighth Eduard P-51D. It doesn't look too bad, but good gosh I have a story for you whenever I get around to finishing it.

Another one to the finish line.

Ki-84 Hayate "Frank" by Hasegawa is by far my favorite 1/72 scale WWII aircraft build. Everything went together the way it was supposed to and I couldn't ask for a better build experience. I highly recommend this one to everyone; I got it at Frontline Model Kits & Hobbies for $13 so it's definitely a budget price but the finished product sure doesn't feel budget level.

Bench update.

Trying my best to match individual panel colors as per the paint guide for the Eduard P-51D.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think this little Ki-84 would end up being one of my best kits of all time. Got the rest of the decals on, the yellow/orange wing lines, and propeller & tips changed to the correct color. Did not get to the engine exhaust weathering on the left hand side yet.

Won't be much updates for the next day or two, as work is mandatory today and tomorrow ill be playing with the 1:1 scale metal beasts.

Not much in the way of big updates recently.

The Eduard Model Accessories P-51D Mustang is primed and ready for inital painting.

I'm also working on a 1/72 scale Hasegawa Ki-84 kit that is coming along nicely. Can't beat these Hasegawa kits in 1/72 scale.

Main build update time!

Eduard Model Accessories Mighty Eighth P-51D Mustang

Spent some time with the cockpit detail work tonight. I'm getting better at applying photo etch materials (LockTite Professional Liquid CA glue).

I do think next time I'll airbrush the inner walls of the fuselage instead of hand brushing. I know no one will actually see it, but it will save me time.

The cockpit section work takes the longest out of all the construction process, but it's the least seen part of the entire build. Funny how that works. Modelers are a special breed 😆

So I did a thing for a fun Saturday night project. A $7.50 Starfix 1/72 scale Skyhawk + a sheet of 1/72 scale Blue Angels decals = one polished turd. I'm actually quite proud of the way this one turned out.

Also don't be scared to try new things. That cheap walmart brand metallic ink marker is the best detailing marker I own. Period. Nothing else is even close. I did 100% of the silver color with it. The coverage is amazing. I would not be scared at all to do an entire 1/72 scale aircraft with this marker.

Italeri 1/72 scale F-14A Tomcat is done. I used it to practice my putty application (Holy freakin seams Batman!) and my own oil paint/mineral spirits pinwash. Also missing decals for things every single other F-14 kit has that I've come across so far (the dark areas on top of the intakes next to the cockpit) that I had to hand paint.

Good lord its a rough kit. But I did the best of my ability currently. It might look rough, but I did learn things, and thats all that matters right now.

Completed!

The Airfix 1/48 scale P-40B Warhawk has crossed the finish line. This is my 2nd completed Airfix kit (the first being the P-51D that serves as my page banner) and both were fabulous to put together.

So...oh yeah! That's what I meant to tell you.

I've been working on a 1/72 scale F-4 Phantom II by Accurate Miniatures. I fibbed too...my bad...I actually hand brushed this one.

Best part of the kit are the decals. Very nice and thin and lay flat really well.

The kit itself? Pretty rough. Flash everywhere. Gaps galore. Mis-numbered sprue parts. Decal placement guide is a joke. Ah well. It'll be worth it in the end by the way it looks. Gonna sharpen up some of the edges of the paint and finish the build over the holiday weekend hopefully.
