I WENT TO PICK UP MY WIFE AND NEWBORN TWINS FROM THE HOSPITAL — I ONLY FOUND THE BABIES AND A NOTE. I can't explain the excitement I felt as I drove to the hospital to bring Suzie and our newborn twin daughters home. I had spent the past few days decorating the nursery, cooking a big family dinner, and planning the perfect welcome. I even picked up balloons on the way. But when I arrived, my excitement turned into confusion. Suzie wasn't there. I just found our two sleeping daughters and a note. My hands shook as I unfolded it: "Goodbye. Take care of them. Ask your mother WHY she did this to me." I froze, rereading it over and over. What the hell did this mean? Where was Suzie? I asked the nurse, my voice trembling. "Where's my wife?" "She checked out this morning," the nurse said hesitantly. "She said you knew." Knew? I had no clue. I drove home with the twins, my mind racing, replaying every moment of Suzie's pregnancy. She seemed happy — or was I blind? When I got home, my mom was there, smiling and holding a casserole. "Oh, let me see my grandbabies!" I pulled back. "Not yet, Mom. I'm Gerry, 76.

My wife, Martha, and I were married 52 years. Three kids. Seven grandkids. Quiet life in an old Vermont house that creaks like it's alive.

I thought I knew her.

Turns out… I didn't.

There was one thing in our house that never made sense.

The attic.

The door was ALWAYS locked.

Every time I asked, Martha would wave it off.

"Just junk, Gerry. My parents' old furniture."

So I dropped it.

For FIVE DECADES.

Two weeks ago, Martha fell and broke her hip. They sent her to rehab.

For the first time in years, I was alone in the house.

That's when I heard it.

A sound from upstairs.

SCRATCHING.

Slow. Careful. Rhythmic.

Not mice. Not squirrels.

It sounded like something being dragged across the floor.

My heart started pounding.

I grabbed a flashlight and tried Martha's keys.

None of them fit.

That scared me more than the noise. Martha kept everything on that key ring.

I stood there for a long time, just listening.

Then I grabbed a screwdriver and forced the lock.

The door creaked open.

The SMELL hit first.

Something old. Heavy. Rotten.

I raised the flashlight.

And that's when I saw IT.

The thing Martha had hidden from me for 52 YEARS.

My legs nearly gave out.
