Excessive Heat Event

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard has issued an excessive heat warning from June 15th at 10:00 AM through 9:00 PM June 16th, and an excessive heat watch from June 16th at 9:00 PM to June 18th at 9:00 PM. Temperatures in the valleys and inland mountain areas are expected to exceed the 100 degree mark for a prolonged period of time, with relatively poor overnight recovery.

The high temperatures may create a dangerous situation in which heat‐related illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids. Stay in air‐conditioned rooms. Stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Signs and Symptoms of Heatstroke
• Symptoms – headache, nausea, face flushed, hot and dry skin, no perspiration, body temperature over 101°F, chills, and/or rapid pulse.
• First Aid – cool person immediately, move to shade or indoors, wrap in a cool, wet sheet, and get medical
assistance.

Children, the elderly, and those with significant underlying medical conditions are most susceptible to the effects of heat. No person or pet should be left in an enclosed vehicle or direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Temperatures quickly rise to life‐threatening levels – even if the windows are partially open.

Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911

Happy LGBTQIA+ Pride Month! June has been designated as the month to nationally recognize the impact LGBTQ+ people have had in the world. Moorpark College celebrates the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals and community, and will continue to provide a safe and inspiring place to learn and work. Faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and students have received Safe Zone training so they may provide instruction and services within a culturally responsive framework. They respect and promote the dignity of everyone on our campus and are particularly protective of our campus members who exist outside of the gender binary. Through our actions in the classroom, performance spaces, offices, and beyond, we educate to improve attitudes and encourage inclusiveness. Through civic engagement, we raise awareness of the current political issues facing the LGBTQ+ community. Our new College mission statement begins by stating “Grounded in equity, social justice, and a students’ first philosophy, Moorpark College values diverse communities.” The campus continues to be welcoming and supportive of all people, and in particular our LGBTQ+ students and colleagues, by implementing the Preferred Name Policy, which gives LGBTQ+ students and employees the option to use a preferred first name that may be different from their legal name. SPECTRUM, the Moorpark College LGBTQIA+ student organization has been a safe harbor for students and affirmed their identities for about two decades.

As an out gay man of color, an educator, and a father, I am committed to fostering an equitable and inclusive learning and work environment that supports our students in achieving their academic, professional, and personal goals. In my14-years at the college, there has always been support for our LGBTQ+ students, but I also remember a time when SPECTRUM club meetings were held in secret to safeguard the identity and well-being of its members. Thankfully, we continue to grow and embrace the diversity that makes our campus a dynamic and innovative learning community. Please join me in pledging to champion what is right by our students, staff, faculty and administrators by being inclusive so that all are truly safe and thrive on our campus. In honor of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, our campus social media will highlight contributions of LGBTQ+ folk to society. Once again, Happy Pride.

Dr. Julius Sokenu, President, Moorpark College

Filing comments in RM-11909 | REC Networks

Important support for LPFM radio stations everywhere. Comment and let the FCC know your support of LPFM being capable of increasing their transmit power to 250watts - giving them further reach into the communities they serve.

Greetings from Riverton. As you may know by now, the FCC has put LP-250 back on the radar with their public notice of REC’s Petition for Rulemaking (PRM), RM-11909.

VCAPCD Air Quality Alert for Wildfire Smoke for Friday-Monday, August 21-24, 2020
Ventura County APCD is issuing an Air Quality Alert for wildfire smoke throughout Ventura County due to the smoke from numerous fires burning in California; predominantly in Northern California. The smoke from these fires is currently sitting north and west of Ventura and is now entering and encompassing all of Ventura County. During these conditions, the air quality can be unhealthful. This air quality alert will expire Monday, August 24, 2020 at 8AM PDT. Please keep in mind that wildfire smoke concentrations can vary hour by hour and change frequently. Forecast AQI colors are meant to be as representative as possible for the 24-hr day. At times, air quality is likely to be better or worse than is indicated for the full day. Air quality should be considered unhealthy in areas directly impacted by smoke. If you are in an area directly impacted by smoke, please exercise extreme caution and avoid vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion. People with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should remain indoors. Run your air conditioner if you have one. Keep the filter clean and fresh air intake closed. Close all windows and doors that lead outside to prevent bringing additional smoke inside. If this is not an option or it becomes extremely hot inside, please seek alternate shelter. For additional information, call the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District at 805.662.6960 (Monday-Friday), visit vcapcd.org, or follow VCAPCD on Twitter (@vcapcd) for the latest air quality updates. Thank you.
