‼️Graphic Pictures Warning‼️

Two weeks ago we came home to the worst injury we’ve had yet with the animals. Cash (fka Blizzard), our little $120 rooster that was the sole hatchling of my shipped eggs, had a pretty severe pecking wound. We determined it had perforated his crop and were left with the decision of whether to put him out of his misery or attempt to heal it. He didn’t seem like he was suffering and was still super spunky so we decided on healing. We were able to close the wound in two separate layers…. Superglue on the crop and then sutured the layer of skin above. We withheld food for the first 36 hours and strictly limited his water intake to allow the crop time to start to heal. We progressed on to very soft and watery mash, and his crop seemed to be holding wonderfully and he was having normal BM. He was started on antibiotics as a precaution to treat any infection that may arise. We slowly increased how much food he was eating at a time. One week after his initial surgery, his sutures either had dissolved (I learned my lesson about dissolvable sutures for external 🤦‍♀️) or they pulled open because of his spitfire attitude and the top layer was open again. His crop repair still seemed to be holding though so we decided to just keep the wound clean and let it heal openly instead of attempting to suture again. Throughout these two weeks he’s never appeared as though this injury has slowed him down at all. When I got home from work this morning, not even a full 2 weeks after initial injury, I looked at the wound and found it almost completely healed externally. He’s staying isolated until fully healed and feathers are fully grown back in to prevent being picked on more. We’re also continuing a soft mash for the time being to reduce strain on the crop.

To say that I was not expecting this positive of an outcome is quite the understatement. We got very lucky with how well this little dude’s healed up thus far.

Based on this wound healing, I will forever swear by silver honey and vetericyn wound spray.

Am I a little crazy for putting curtains in my chicken coop? Maybe. Do we have hens happier to use the nesting boxes now instead of laying in the corner? Yes. Worth it.

Let’s be honest, the nice coop really is for my benefit, not theirs 🤦‍♀️
