The “perimeter of a grocery store” refers to the outer aisles where fresh, less-processed foods are typically located, such as produce, dairy, meat, and bakery sections. Shopping the perimeter is a common strategy for finding healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins before moving to the more processed and packaged goods found in the inner aisles.
What to find on the perimeter
Produce: Fresh fruits and vegetables are almost always on the perimeter.
Meat, Poultry, and Seafood: These sections are typically located along the outer walls.
Dairy: Milk, cheese, and eggs are usually found in a dairy section on the perimeter.
Bakery: Freshly baked breads and other goods are often at the outer edge.
Why shop the perimeter?
Healthier Choices: It’s a shortcut to finding the freshest and least processed foods.
Less Processed: Items on the perimeter are often naturally lower in unhealthy fats, sodium, and sugar compared to processed items in the middle aisles.
Nutrient-Dense Foods: You can stock up on nutrient-dense items before you’re tempted by processed snacks in the middle aisles.
A note of caution
Not foolproof: Some processed items, like sugary yogurts or processed meats, can also be located on the perimeter.
Healthy items are in the aisles: Don’t forget about the inner aisles entirely, as they contain many healthy staples like whole grains, beans, nuts, and canned goods.
